On the radio 4 this morning some guy (I missed his name but he knew Southgate quite well) was saying that the FA had 'considered' others but knew Southgate inside out, and his brief would likely be do what you can with the group you have but nothing spectacular would be expected and getting out of the tournament finals groups would be classed as 'job done'. Anything else would be a 'bonus'

Imagine being a cryogenically frozen a mere 10 years ago you're defrosted up after a miracle cure is found , as you're taking your first breath you here that Trump is now president of the USA , Southern are still striking due to lack of something or another , Theresa May declares Eastbourne a city and then just as you think it's all a big giggle you hear that Gareth fkn Southgate now commands the England football team , " Erm iv'e changed my mind , put me back to sleep , wake me up in August 2018 when Trump has been made into a effigy of Trump , May has been exposed as having welsh ancestry and England have been knocked out of the group games at the world cup , seriously if you mix and matched those 3 for each others jobs nobody would notice anything out of the ordinary .

Good luck to him. Can he turn a collection of overpaid, holier than thou, look at me 'superstars' into a team able to compete at a tournament? We won't find out until 2018(unless he implodes and buggers up qualification)
