The only way to run high speed, luxury bullet trains on the Brighton to London line would be to close most of the stations and reduce the capacity of the service to ensure that far fewer people could travel than want to.

If you prefer the Japanese way, you can always book a trip on that lovely train. Unfortunately, you'll find that all seats are fully booked until March 2018. Even Southern provide a better service than that.

theres the thing, we have a Victorian network and a deference to keeping things as they were. Japan will cast out the old in a heart beat for the latest technology, razing the old buildings in the way.

Been to Japan twice over last 30 years. First went in 1991 and bought a ticket on the Shinkanzen line. The cashier worked out what I was to pay using an abacus. There were beads flying everywhere. Was amazed that to travel on one of the most technologically advanced pieces of machinery in the world was all done with beads.

Second trip in 2008 was all arranged through facsimile - a device many still continue to use. So yes they are advanced, but they have quite a few cultural barriers to using it to the full.

Both franchises are owned by the same company. Those new Thameslink trains might look nice from the outside but are designed to get more people standing as they go through London (hence the extra space between the seats) and the new seats are very uncomfortable to sit on for any length of time.

That and there are no tables or even pull down trays so it's pretty much impossible to work on one and you have nowhere to place a drink apart from on the floor. I hate them.

This is no doubt true but cultural qualities have their good and bad sides. The Japanese culture has a lot of strange offshoots thanks to the hyper-sensitive obsessions with form, dignity and efficiency. Not sure I'd make the trade.

That said - Island folk are generally supposed to be a bit weird (without realising it) Now what's our deal, that considered?

Been on both SR and JR and haven't seen many SR OBS's bow as they leave the carriage. Why are the seats on the new SR trains like ironing boards that don't even have a table pull down or cup holder. JR is as good as it gets and you will never see a passenger with their shoes on the seats.

Southern may be slow, with lots of delays - but do you really need sleeper trains on the London - Brighton service? It must have really gone down a lot since I lived in those parts!
