I think so, and it becomes more and more likely with the increasing blame culture.

Has it? I'd be interested to see the source and detail of that.

You could say the same about driving a car, bus, taxi etc...

Also wasn't there an incident at Goring a few years back with a girl getting dragged under running along side a train? I assume the conductor is in jail for that ?

One guard currently in prison and one up for trial at the moment

Is this in the news? Is it related to the Goring incident?

Seems to me the strike option has run it's course. It's being hopelessly diluted by the fact that Thameslink trains provide a ready alternative, plus a fair number of Southern trains with drivers seem to run unaffected. Indeed, most customers who brave the strikes report a more pleasant journey with more personal space than on non-strike days. Such is the politics of the madhouse that is the train service in this neck of the woods. Said it before, say it again, it needs the DRIVERS to come out on strike in support of their colleagues and bring the network to a standstill. Until that happens, striking is a fairly meaningless gesture that might as well be declared, Monday thru Friday, for the foreseeable, for all the difference that it makes.

This.

But it's not Southerns drivers who need to strike. I now get the Thameslink on strike days from Three Bridges or a Southwest train from Havant. As you say people learn to cope as time goes on and one the main coping mechanism is not using Southern trains.

This will probably get a 2000 word diatribe from Ernest, but I think the unions are losing.

So here we are the 5.57 to Brighton cant leave London Bridge because there is no guard. Now this is a DOO route AND a DOO train but due to the luddites not agreeing we are now ****ing stuck because the guard isnt here.

Yes I get he may be delayed but even so. It could ****ing go but no. Thanks to the guards not letting a perfectly able train leave without one of them on board. Ridiculous.

Why should the drivers support them? Its job protectionsim. Nothing more norhing less. It is NOT passenger safety!

Our detour down the Arun Valley line isn't happening, as the 1706 from VIC to BTN is now running as originally booked (albeit late, for obvious reasons).

In the occasions that I've been on a train that has hit someone (4) then the guard has been invaluable in assisting passengers and the driver

This is where you and I (and the rail accident investigation branch) disagree. DOO trains are less safe. The question is, does anybody really care

I have been on plenty of DOO and I survived. Im quite happy to take my chances. Im sure millions of others are as well.

What difference would a guard on a DOO train on a DOO route have made today for example? But it couldnt leave because of their ****ing stupid "no way can a train leave in exceptional circumstances"

There is only one reason. Job protectionism they know itll get phased out eventually. Safety MY JAPS EYE. Sorry lads but is been like that for centuries. Its the equivalent of smashing the spinning jenny.

If ever there was an argument to tip me towards supporting DOO it's tonight. I'm being delayed even more than I should be because conductors are stuck all over the place!
