I cannot believe people are ignorant enough to come on here, and state as hard fact that Butters / Kuipers and / or Wilkins are at fault for goals that they have not even seen. It beggars belief, it really does.

I enjoyed the match last night although the official site comment about us dominating the game from the start really was not the case in my view.
Southend were on top when we scored but it was a really good goal by Cox. Best move of the night. Then we were holding on quite comfortably until we made a substitution when defending a corner, which you should never do. I am not sure if Kuipers was at fault as it was up the other end but he could well have been.
I hope Wilkins learns from this but it does show that he may need a more experienced manager/director of football to work alongside him.
I don't want to get into the Kuipers/Henderson debate but there would have been a lot more fuss made of that goal if Henderson had conceded it. There is no rationality from some people. I thought that Kuipers did well last night but if he was at fault for the goal then that changed the game.

My thoughts (couldn't be arsed to post when I got in at gone midnight last night).
Firstly, if indeed somebody from the Albion told Southend that only 100 of us were expected, as their stewards claimed while we queued outside for the one ticket window which was originally open, then they don't know our support very well.
As for the game, I thought we played reasonably well. Some decent passing and we looked fairly comfortable at the back for most of it. Cracking goal, our best move of the game. Kuipers had made a couple of great saves at the end of the first half to preserve parity, so I'm reluctant to blame him for the equaliser, especially as it was at the other end. I suspect the daft substitution made just as we were about to defend that corner had more to do with it.
Ladybird's 'My first book of football tactics' dictates that you shouldn't do that. Oh well. I seriously doubt Deano will make a similar mistake again. The capitulation after that was vaguely depressing after we'd done pretty well for long periods, but the second and third goals were crackers - if Southend score a better goal than either of them this season I'll be surprised.
I did see our second go in, unlike plenty of people who'd baled out by that point. Can't say I blame them on this occasion - has anybody seen us do anything other than lose there? I bloody hate going to Southend. 12 year old chavs trying to wind us up on the train on the way back. Southend'll draw Chelsea or Arsenal now, just bloody watch.
Some positives though. Cox in particular is getting better and better - I can't see how Carpenter can dislodge him. The team selection for Carlisle will be very interesting indeed. And at least it was 'only' the League Cup.

It's interesting that the hysterical ranting of the stay at home keyboard warriors has been gradually replaced by the much more rational comments of the people who were actually there.
I was at home listening on the radio and it seemed that we were deperately unlucky and that 3 goals for them was a distortion of the balance of play throughout the game.
It seems to me that, overall, we are playing well and as people return from injury and suspension, we will have more options.

D We had 9 attempts on goal - that in itself shows our 'new' ethos
E Shame so many fans left early when they should have stayed to appluad the players for the hard work and entertainment they provided the traveling faithfull

An entertaining game although the first half especially had a training ground feel to it.
Great goal by Albion including the finish by Cox and a special mention to Reid and Loft who set it up - Frutos was a liability last night, so some credit at least for one of the substitutions.
Their first goal looked like Kuipers fault but being down the other end, we couldn't really tell - As others have said putting a sub on for a corner really is basic Sunday league stuff. Similarly, the subbing of Hart was strange as he had more left in the tank than Revell who was clearly knackered (He was outstanding last night though). It also meant we stopped defending from the front and conceded possesion too easily at a time we needed to keep the ball. Their 2nd and 3rd goals were born of a team playing with confidence although after the Butters substitution we seemed to be playing without a Right back. Perhaps we thought we were down to 10 men again?
Southend looked like a better team to me (the age old story of the cutting edge and more worryingly fitter than us). As mentioned Revell was spent, Hammond and Fraser especially looked tired and the early season excuses don't wash anymore with me reagarding fitness.
Still, overall positive. A good passing display by a young team who will only get better. Like Nottingham Forest - If we had Grant Holt playing for us we would have won. With Southend, if we had Eastwood I'm sure we would have beaten them. We still need a striker.
