Southend United could go out of business later this month after prospective buyers expressed "urgent" concerns about their protracted takeover attempts.

A winding-up petition, which was adjourned for the final time in May, is set to be heard in the High Court on 26 June.

The consortium, led by Australian businessman Justin Rees, says a property element of the contract which has caused the takeover of the National League side to stall now "seems certain" not to be signed ahead of the court date.

Even if a compromise is reached, it seems certain that the revised property contract will not be signed prior to the 26 June winding up hearing for the club in the High Court."

He was also critical of the council’s previous administration and added elements of the proposal as previously negotiated and assurances given "fell outside of normal practice and were simply not achievable".

Bloody hell. Wish there could be some good news for Southend fans.

Bobby Moore was the manager of Southend at one point in time!
84-86. Not exactly a legend there:

And a young John Keeley was his first choice keeper for a short time, until a quip about Moore’s fetching gold bracelet didn’t quite hit the spot 🙈

Unfortunately like we did Southend had an owner who had non footballing motives, I hope they can survive but if they do go I fear they won’t be the last this season.

Hope they get some good news soon.

I believe the last time I went there Adams subbed Kuipers at half time, we had just signed Zamora and sang “Bring On The Champions” before the game, believe we ended up as Champions too but I don’t recall the score. Last game against them I was at was Withdean on a very rainy day where the pitch resembled a mud bath (I think) and I don’t remember that result either! Happy days!

Replaced by Cartwright who then went to Shrewsbury. We lost by the way.

We lost 2-0. That chant before the game set us up nicely for the fall.

Yep, was there too. Think we lost. I was with a Southend mate in with the home fans. Subbing Kuipers at HT was mental😀

The owe 2.5 million and yet there is so much money in football. Just read that Marcus Rashford
owns several Rolls-Royce cars, including a £390,000 Black Badge Cullinan and a Cullinan Blue Shadow.

He also reportedly owns a £280,000 McLaren 765 Long Tail and a £350,000 Lamborghini Urus Performante.

The gulf is unreal!

If all PL Clubs chipped in 120k or so it'd save a club founded in 1906 facing oblivion

I have no time for Southend owner Wrong Martin but still think there is a fair chance the Club will survive. There have been 13 previous winding up orders, mainly from HMRC. The irony that this winding up order is from the law firm that defended him in previous cases is spectacularly off the scale.

Martin gets off on brinkmanship, loves getting fans fearing for the future for the club but does have a habit of finding cash at the last minute.

May i just endorse this view of Martin and add on the many occasions our paths have crossed not once did he convince me he had the best interests of the club at heart, just little remarks after a few drinks that confirm most of what Southend supporters think of him, a low life chancer, who somehow still manages to keep the clubs throat pinned to the ground with a firm grasp in the art of ducking and diving, he try's to portray himself as this jolly saintly saviour of Southend Utd FC,and you would not be able to spend 2 minutes with him before he starts talking about money, i didn't have the misfortune to meet Archer, but i can't help but feel these two would of got on like a house on fire
