In Southampton now. Got to watch the match with a former colleague from the wrong end but looking around I don't see any signs of support for them so should be safe to shout out when we score Can't see any way we will keep a clean sheet so going for a 2-1 Albion win.

We should be able to edge this one but if they score early I can see us on the end of a drubbing ! On the other hand a 3 - 3 draw could be on the cards. Oh I don't know - just wish I was there !

Loooks like about 50% going for a home win, 30% for an away win (including me*) and about 20% for a draw. But 32% are going for a Southampton win by two or more goals which must be par. (* never got a score right yet this year).

Except as you cannot play on both wings at the same time, one midfielder can drop back, or in the classic 4-4-2 both wingers drop back in midfield and you have no wingers at all. Or one winger goes wide and the target man drops deep.


Subs: Ankergren, Dunk, Paynter, Painter, Vincelot (perhaps Kazenga)

assuming, Hoskins and Vicente are both unfit. If Reyes is unfit, Painter starts on the left. I don't know about the team but anything other than a 4-4-2 and Gus is being exceptionally courageous.

I think Reyes won't be able to play, so it might have to be Taricco on the right. This is where the Southampton quick attacks originate*, cause Lambert can only kick with his right foot (like Macca). Then Painter is left back. This means Noone gets a free reign. I prefer Barnes to Paynter. Barnes has got bottle. So has Navarro. It is on these sort of matches it shows. Neither of them are the brightest sparks, but hell, bottle is bottle. (*Feed from the left hand side.)

As far as I have been able to work out Southampton play a straightforward 4-4-2. They are not a hoof team, but seem to be quick on breakaways (counter-attacks) and would not be ideal against a team who plays deep. Their best players would seem to be Lallana, Fonte and Lambert, all of whom would get in the Albion team. Not forgetting Harding and Hammond
They tend to play possession/passing football when they are ahead. They still stick to the solid 4-4-2 though. With this system , I would expect some teams to play 4-5-1 against them and stifle the midfield, especially when visiting St. Mary's. Then the size of their team could help with crosses.

In contrast I would say that Albion are a passing team, but other teams try and make them play the long ball, by pressing. In the early part of the season they tired out and we enjoyed a good run against weaker opponents with 4-3-3. Albion press intermittently and play deep defence (rather than a high line). Our best success this season seems to be when we are running with the ball at tired teams. (Very brief explanation)

i just hate not knowing who is fit and who is not, I think it is going to be a big let down again ref the team with Reyes, Vicente, Buckley and Hoskins all missing again.
