Saints sign Colchester's Hammond

Hammond joined Colchester from Brighton in January 2008
Southampton have completed the signing of Colchester United midfielder Dean Hammond on a three-year deal.

The 26-year-old has made more than 200 league appearances and started his career with Brighton before having loan spells at Aldershot and Leyton Orient.

"We're in League One at the moment so obviously promotion is the aim, and I want to be a part of that," Hammond told the club website.

"The club has got a massive ambition to get back to the top."

He added: "This is a massive club with a Premiership set up and it represented an opportunity that I couldn't turn down, so I'm just very excited about the move."

Manager Alan Pardew said: "Dean is a fantastic leader and tremendously energetic. He captained Colchester and will bring a lot of quality to the club that I think the fans will appreciate."
