I guess Plymouth is on the 'south-west' coastline, which probably starts just beyond Bournemouth. When you think of Dorset, do you think 'south' or 'south-west'?
Good question. I vacillated between south and south west, which led me to the realisation that not only did I not know this or where the south coast actually was but every region was fuzzy in my mind. So I googled it and apparently there are nine official regions of England, Dorset being in the South West.

Further Googling has however so far failed to clarify what is considered the south coast. Some have it as Kent, Sussex, Hampshire, Dorset. Some have it as the whole coast line along from cornwall to kent. One site had it as just Dorset, Hampshire and West Sussex.

I fear it's a mystery that will forever elude me.

Never seen Soton as any sort of rival. Neither like nor dislike. In fact they’re the very definition of “Meh” in footballing sense. Characterless.

And where does 'the north' start (many threads on here somewhere!)

I think of Southampton as a very big Newhaven :lolol:
It’s a blooming sight more interesting and has more history than Newhaven.
  • Roman remains
  • a Saxon settlement.
  • more of its town/city walls standing than York.
  • where Henry V set sail from before the battle of Agincourt.
  • where the Titanic sailed from
  • two of the finest chalk streams in the world
  • where Rishi Sunak comes from…… yuk!
  • a Premier League football team………. For the next couple of weeks at least!

In other words, Southampton's so awful that thousands of people decided they'd rather emigrate than stay there.
I'll also never stop finding it bizarre that people in Southampton think anybody else considers how much of their city walls are still standing to be remotely interesting.

Never mind all that, it may be interesting for people that can stand the smell when the tide is out. 😷

Newhaven has plenty to offer.:wink:

Eazy-E memorial bench.
Hi Chi Minh monument.
Newhaven Fort - far more interesting than some old walls.
Saxon Road - the Saxon’s probably came here first and named a road in the town.
Plenty of military history, I’m sure someone famous sailed from here…. it’s not my specialist subject.
Plenty of daily sailings to Dieppe for many years……The Titanic sunk.
The River Ouse - I’m sure anyone walking from Newhaven to Lewes would be impressed with the countryside.
The South Downs - needs no explanation.
Wreckless Eric comes from the town.
Newhaven FC - current winners of the Peter Bentley Cup.
And it’s in SUSSEX!!
