Ask them - why do they have a statue of Ted Rogers coming out from a burns unit?

This chap seems to quite like it;

Looking at it again, we all know it's a monster - that's a given, but we don't really count in the scheme of things do we?

The club don't give a rat's ass what we think, it's a statue, it's paid for, looks a bit shoddy but its here to stay.

They'll probably condition themselves to believe Ted was a 4 ft 7 obese dwarf with odd hand transplants, elephantitis of the head, and size 2 feet who mosied around town wearing his Dad's blazer over a life jacket, his mum's dirty tracksuit bottoms and his nan's blue rinse wig with a big dopey grin on his face rather than shell out any money to sort this out.

I tell you what, if it is cheaper to pay someone to photoshop all the pictures of Ted in circulation to make hik look like that, they probably will

To tune of "who's that team they call Southampton"

Who's that statue on the forecourt?
That strange bronze man holding a ball?
He's got little stumpy legs
Strange hands and a huge big head
It certainly don't look like Ted Bates at all.

Its a shame we cant pinch their threads as NSC Gold, because that thread linked above is perhaps the funniest thing I have ever seen on a message board.

Its starts out very positive before it has been unvieled and then decends into abject hiilarity and suicidal tendancies

Agreed:

"That's right make a joke of something that the majority of us contributed to and feel deeply about. Some of us are very upset about those pictures and are preying they are poor photographs and are not doing the statue justice!

Sometimes in life you get ONE chance to get things right. Have we really f**ked this one up? "

"Then got off your arse and go and have a look in broad daylight not make judgements from pictures teken at night!!! FFS."

etc etc etc :lolol: :lolol:

That thread is indeed brilliantly funny:

"See... I think with a set a glasses we could flog it to the North Koreans."

The Ted Bates statue
THE Ted Bates Trust have revealed their "distress" at the negative response to the £112,000 statue of the Saints legend.

They claim they have not been"able to sleep or eat or do anything since the statue was unveiled" on Saturday night.

And they have also hit out at criticism levelled their way by fans who claim the committee members should have told sculptor Ian Brennan the statue was not a decent likeness of Bates before it was unveiled.

"We have not tried to pull the wool over anyone's eyes," said a spokesman for the Trust.

Trust officials - including chairman Dave Ford and Janet Formby - were shown two pictures of Ted Bates' head on Friday, March 9.

The spokesman added: "We defy anyone to say that the pictures we saw were not Ted Bates".

advertisement"We have not tried to pull the wool over anyone's eyes.

"That is what we saw and what we thought we would see when the statue was unveiled".

I've been at St Marys all day today for a meeting can confirm that the statue is EVERY BIT as wrong as people have been saying.

The head is WAY too big, arm that is sticking up is way too long and the other arm is, well, just wrong. The legs are too short.

I spoke to a few Saints fans who were there and it's safe to say they are all pretty embarrassed by the whole thing. "We are just a laughing stock" was a typical comment.

They are also PETRIFIED that the statue will be visited by Pompey fans in the middle of the night and 'amended'.

The whole thing is just completely HILARIOUS

To be fair, a statue portrait is not actually "art" anymore. We didn't comission an "artist" to "interpret" old Ted, we commissioned a sculptor to work from photos etc to create a likeness.

And I would think any "interpretation" there was would make him look more dynamic and a winner, not more like a Hobbit.

Funnily enough, this is because many of us didn't meet the man, and from the pictures here it looks like he has been immortalised as little Jimmy Krankie.

"You get the feeling that someone, somewhere was waiting to say "errr...could you just make him look less like an Umpa-Lumpa?" but didn't for fear of upsetting the family, or the sculptor or the club, or wrecking the deadline.

There is someone somewhere involved in this who said to his wife (or husband) on the drive home last night..."I should have said something".
