Got 3½ weeks in SA coming up and was looking to the NSC experts as to any advice on where to go and what to do etc. Have got a hire car booked for the entire time and a safari in the Kruger booked for the first week.

Obviously have read up on certain areas but wondering what people's recommendations are for where to head once the safari is over. Have been to Cape Town a few times already so probably not going down that way again. Other than that we're completely undecided on what to do, just need to end up back at Jo'burg.

Ta!

After Kruger, go to Pilgrim's Rest, Sabie area and explore up that way. Then drive to KZN for the Drakensberg mountains on your way to the beach, somewhere on the KZN South Coast. Then drive through the Eastern Cape and explore around Grahamstown etc. Maybe do a bit of the Garden Route if not done before. Then drive back up north through the Karoo which is magnificent in a desolate sort of way. Then do Kimberley. Couple of days up near Pretoria maybe then back to the airport.

Any tips on good places to be for Xmas and New Years? Haven't booked any accomodation yet so probably to late to stay in the bigger towns/cities?

I would get booking if I were you - School hols start end of next week until 2nd week in January, so places will be busy (I hope!!).

When you getting here? The route I described is a LOT of driving, so places for Xmas/New Year depends on when you get here and when you are leaving.
I have always fancied having Xmas lunch in the mountains somewhere - Cathedral Peak for example. Or on the beach! But you will have to book well in advance.
Are you are party animal? In which case, New Year will be best spent in a biggish city I would say - most people I know are fast asleep by 10pm on New Years Eve!!

Just got back from Cape Town and is AMAZING!!!

As long as you use common sense and respect where you are you will have an amazing time!!

if you can, you need to book a Shark Dive....once in a lifetime, they are MASSIVE and at the same time, very graceful and shy animals!!

Im off out now but will repost some useful info for you later tonight!!

Have been to Cape Town a few times already, the shark diving was amazing, wasn't once in a lifetime though as have been twice :lolol: Stayed for a few days in Hermanus each time which was brilliant for whale watching in the bay, escpecially going out there in a kayak. Could go on forever about how much I love Cape Town too!

Looking forward to exploring some other parts of SA now.

Going to be slap bang in the middle of the hols then! Leave on the 8th Dec and get back 3rd Jan. Spent a few Xmas' ago in Cape Town which was a bit surreal as all the shops were open down the waterfront and so nothing like what it is in England.

Not really a party animal no, but will try and stay in a bigger place I think. Thanks for all your advice, much appreciated.

Cheers Mr Blobby, good read!

If you need some new teeth, visit these guys in Jo'burg. They take the false teeth from the corpses at all the local funeral parlours and sell them on for 20 rand a set - just keep trying them till you find some that fit.

Cape town and Stellenbosch are nice - but its not really africa is it. I'm lucky as when I pop over to visit the wifes family we stay around their home bordering the Kruger and its a 'wild' experience every day around there....although the malaria risk is a pain, so remember to take your malarone. Certainly go down to pilgrims rest, god's window, three rondavels etc.
