Half of my family are South African, including a few who live in Cape Town. If you want, I could get them to put together an itinerary (or at least a definitive list) based on your requirements above?

Robben island a must. Boulders beach (I think that was the name) home to penguins, very cold water but you can swim with them.
If you are travelling around, I recommend a stay at Bartholomews Klip which is a few hours drive north of cape town. It’s the largest wheat farm on the cape, has a búffalo research project and does mini safaris (wildlife and beautiful scenery but no big game). Wonderful accommodation and dining in the old colonial farmhouse. Caveat is that I was last there 15 years ago but it is still one of my favourite places in the world. Look it up

One of my favorite cities in the world. Unfortunately it does get a lot of bad rep from various media outlets. Cape Town is relatively safe but you to have street stress about you....no different from other cities in the world. I was lucky to be in Cape Town for two weeks over the football World Cup.

100% recommend doing a couple of nights at a safari lodge. We stayed a night at Aquila Private Game Reserve and saw 4 of the Big 5 over two days. Just amazing to see wildlife in the natural habitat.
Really really enjoyed the guided tour of Robben Island. Such a historic yet emotional place to understand what Mandela went through be imprisoned for years.
Enjoy Harty. Your sterling goes a long way as well, so you'll eat and drink like a king for a couple of weeks!

Cape point, table mountain, Hermanus, the V & A waterfront..

From the waterfront you can jump on an open top bus and choose a route! Covers the vineyards, and a whole bunch of other stuff..
Avoid the CBD/long street.. cos it's crap

You can see penguins on boulders beach, I'm not sure you can swim with them, and tbh they are at risk now and they really ought to close tourists from going there..

It’s a very big country Harty. We lived in joburg and someone suggested we holidayed down in Durban…that was not that far off 1000 miles away and fortunately my dad had a pilots license as his company had planes to get about the place. He flew us down in this little cramped Cessna and it took for ever.

Stellenbosche(sp) area for wines is fantastic as is the garden route up from Cape Town.

have your wits about you and stick to the tourist areas.

I went around 25 years ago and backpacked around from Jo'burg to Durban then down to Cape Town. I imagine you'll be staying in far nicer places than I did at the time but as others have said keep your wits about you even in city centres and think about hiring a guide or taking organised tours if travelling by road.

Robben Island, Table Mountain are "must visit" places, I've got good memories of Kruger National Park and I loved the Drakensberg Mountains. It's a beautiful country and I hope you have a great time.

No, I've reached that point, even before Saturday, that a lot of what we do now is payback for Mrs H and her years as a football widow.

In the days before I had a mobile, just the landline, during the 'war', July 95 onwards, there was a particular Albion fan based in the States who used to ring up on sporadic Sunday nights, Monday mornings actually, to get an update, without taking into account the time difference or the fact that I had a three year and six month old in adjoining rooms.

At times with what was going on, he was crying down the phone, so I never had the heart to tell him what the UK time was.
