The one thing that the rest of the World loves about this country is our sense of pageantry. We have a long and proud history which most countries can only view with envy. I'm no great fan of the Royal family but at the same time they make the rest of the World look at us in a very positive way. No other family in the World can generate as much interest as our Royal Family. The way yesterday's proceedings were performed was an object lesson in how to do things right, a fact helped in no small part by William and his wife being the most popular Royals thanks to their down to earth attitude.

We British are not the sort of people who feel the need to ram our patriotism down people's throats unlike some companies, our National Anthem does not give us heartburn. However, Apart from Cantonese Chinese English is the most widely spoken language in the World, no reason why we shouldn't celebrate a Royal Wedding big style, even if it does give some citizens of other countries an excuse to air their inferiority complexes.

Believe me there's at least one poster that applies to. I am not hugely patriotic but I do get irritated by people belittling our heritage.

There is a fair amount in our history for which we should be ashamed, just like there is much about which we should be proud.

That can be said of anybody, all that happened yesterday was The United Kingdom celebrating itself. Unlike some we don't expect our children to recite the Pledge of Allegiance in schools every week. Do you know of any country that doesn't have a shady past ?

Absolutely not,
so what was the past belittling which irritated you, you referred to earlier?
And who recites the pledge of allegiance in schools every week?

You could do that for the country to if you didn't have to get up for work to earn a living.

It's amawzing what one can achieve when you don't have to worry about where your next meal is coming from.

True that. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but his constant belittling of a country he has never set foot in is a disgrace. I guess an Australian with Irish heritage is bound to have some issues.

Do you live in a cave or something ? I wonder if you have ever been abroad in your life ? Frankly you're just not worth arguing with, you replies to other posts indicate that you're not the sharpest tool in the box.

Be fair, Australians are well balanced people as a rule, they have chips on both shoulders.

That pretty much sum it up for me.

Do we really want the face of our nation to be some slimy politition (thatcher, major, blair, brown, cameron - take your pick) who is power hungry and desperate to be there or would we rather someone who was born into and trained most of their life to do it.

It's the 2nd one every time

Here's a couple of interesting articles about the British Monarchy.

Royal wedding: Does Kate Middleton really want to marry into a family like this? - By Christopher Hitchens - Slate Magazine

For Prince William at least it was decided on the day of his birth what he should do: Find a presentable wife, father a male heir (and preferably a male "spare" as well), and keep the show on the road. By yet another exercise of that notorious "magic," it is now doubly and triply important that he does this simple thing right, because only his supposed charisma can save the country from what monarchists dread and republicans ought to hope for: King Charles III. (Monarchy, you see, is a hereditary disease that can only be cured by fresh outbreaks of itself.) An even longer life for the present queen is generally hoped for: failing that a palace maneuver that skips a generation and saves the British from a man who—like the fruit of the medlar—went rotten before he turned ripe.

Britain’s Royal Wedding: A Big Day For The Global Oligarchy
Bear in mind that London’s royal pageant is being imposed, without any public question, at an estimated cost of some $70 million, most of that for state security against any sign of popular protest. When the wider cost to the economy of the British government’s declared “public holiday” is factored in, the total cost may be $10 billion – this as the British exchequer is embarking on implementing austerity budget cuts of $130 billion. The bill for the royal wedding will be footed by the British public through future deeper cuts in jobs, education and health services, and social welfare programmes. This as the British government unilaterally adds to the public debt the cost of RAF bombing sorties in Libya, estimated at over $1 billion a month, and its other even more costly wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

They're opinions not fact, very biased opinions it would seem. People are entitled to their own views and it's pretty clear what the majority think. The Royal Family pull in God knows how much in tourist revenue so yesterday's 'costs' can be put down to marketing.
