I went from Abba to the Sex Pistols

It was quite a shock,I can tell you

Especially for the neighbours

My mum used to moan when I played my punk records too loud, I went to see her this morning and when she answered the door her radio was on pretty loud……playing London Calling. :)

That reminds me of my step mother ,when she was singing along to Walk On By

It was a Sunday,when the charts used to be on the radio

I'd just got into the Stranglers and thought it was brilliant,them being on the radio

When it finished,she said what an awful song :mad:

I had the opposite reaction. My dad used to listen outside to stuff I was playing and commented on something he really liked - I remember The Doors were popular. He did used to moan if I was playing things too loud at night but that was the volume rather than the music itself.

I also remember his giving me a lift to see Roxy Music and seeing him stand at the entrance to the Dome, entranced by the exotically dressed audience.

Roxy at The Dome!

Almost all the music I liked was disliked by my parents. Now that I’m a parent, I dislike pretty much all that my kids like!

I've never thought about it before but looking back my parents never used to tell me they were annoyed by my music.
My dad was always playing his music quite loud and my mum liked music too.
I think they were a generation that probably got shouted at by their parents for their choice in music but both my parents were pretty tolerant of all new music.
The only thing that used to slightly annoy my dad was cover versions which were always"not as good as the original" or" they have ruined it,why not just leave it alone and enjoy the original".
I never knew what he was going on about but now I'm at an age where I have heard more than a few cover versions I know exactly what he means and I find myself saying the same thing.

For me it had to be Dory Previn back in 1972ish. Mum and dad thought she was a bit miserable (difficult to argue with that) but my mum had the amazing ability to charge into my bedroom just as Dory was singing:
“Loved I two men equally well;
Though they were different as heaven and hell;
One was an artist; one drove a truck
One would make love; the other would f**k.”

My mum always hated the start of Blockbuster (The Sweet) as the start was the sound of the air raid siren of the second world war and brought back bad memories.
And dad wasn't keen on Sid's version of My way :)

Funnily enough, my parents, who were old fashioned, seemed quite neutral about music I liked. My dad watched TOGWT with me without comment about the music. We both thought TOPT was mostly wankery. He did mock the appearance of men 'who look just like women' (long haired types and, later, glam rock types, who he felt looked comically ludicrous) but not so much the music. He sat through all four sides of Irish Tour 74 when I bought and his verdict was 'that's not bad'.

My mum never commented.

That said I wouln't have dreamt of playing my music loud at home, because that would have been just rude. I couldn't believe it when I went round a mate's house in 1976 and he played Stargazer at ear bleeding volume in his living room :eek:

Moving on, I didn't like a lot of the stuff my son listed to. I tried to bring him up properly, with all the post punk lovelies like the Chameleons, Killing Joke, The Sound, Banshees, Comsat Angels, which he still likes, but his own selection veered towards Weezer, Ash, Muse (those hateful Radiohead rip offers) and latterly (he's 35 now) the sort of musicianly music that sends me to sleep, singer songwritery shit, music that leaves me unmoved and somewhat saddened. I played him some Datblygu the other day ('Santa Barbara' :love:) and had to take if off as he found it a bit weird. OK, they sing in Welsh but, come on, you can't understand a word of what's been so-called sung in so-called English, by the sort of long haired layabouts you get these days.

Oops, just channeled the Old Man there :facepalm: :lolol:
Sad to report that David R Edwards died on 20th June. I shared a house with him in Pontypridd around the mid-eighties. I considered doing an RIP thread but, aside from you and Atilla I doubt if anyone else on here had heard of Datblygu.

Ely, Cambs.
I remember my Dad quietly explaining to me why I shouldn't be listening to Talking Heads "Little Creatures" album, as the track "Creatures of Love" was all about the process of procreation and childbirth. He actually banned me from listening to it for a time. Also, not too keen on Iron Maiden, especially their more "satanic" themed songs, good job I was never really into Slayer! :)

Anything by Nasenbluten. A group from Newcastle, Australia. I've always been in to hardcore, but Nasenbluten are a bit different. Their style is so unique, breakbeat/hip hop meets industrial hardcore, all with unnecessary language. c*** face is arguably their best known track from the album '100% no soul guaranteed'.
Definitely an acquired taste.

I can't remember any music that particularly annoyed either of my parents, but coincidentally on the same theme I came across this song on youtube earlier this evening. I'd never heard it before but reading the comments section it caused quite a few adverse reactions amongst parents. It was also banned by the Beeb apparently. Not sure how it escaped my attention.
