Getting a bit O/T here, but did Ian have a brother called Brian? I used to work with a woman called Averil Collier who had some familial connection to Darts but I can't remember who/how (this was back in the late 70s / early 80s). The 'Collier' surname means Ian may have been her brother-in-law. Because I'd been to school with Hornblower we were able to swap 'origin' stories.

EDIT: Ian and Brian may have been cousins rather than brothers. Really can't remember.
I have a feeling there may have been an older brother who may have already left home but I'm not sure. I can't remember the mother's name but I think she was Scottish. I remember her being quite dark, Italian looking. His sister was called Tanya. She'd be about 60 now.

I remember them! I was in a band in the early-mid 80s and we once played on the same bill as them. The Piranhas were the headliners (although I think it was just Bob Grover from the 'classic' lineup) and us and Dance Factor Seven had a bit of an argument as to which of us was should be the opening act. Neither of us wanted to do it! It all got settled amicably (I think we did it). They were good though.

Well O/T, everyone else ignore ...

Blimey, I met Tanya! Averil brought her to a works 'do' and introduced us. I was about 22 and she was about 16. (So yeah, she'd be about 60 now as I'm 67). I thought she was a bit too young for me, and she thought I was a bit too ugly for her. Quite a striking girl though iirc.

Behind My Eyes
If this thread was a competition to name the biggest band to come out of Sussex The Cure would win hands down, but it isn’t.

It’s a good thread and a few bands mentioned I didn’t know came from Sussex.
I know it doesn't matter, but I can't think of a member of the Cure past or present that was actually born in Sussex :0)

That's terrific. I'd like to hear a better quality recording.

So many great 80s bands that left very little in the way of footprint despite being ace.

The Burning Skies of Elysium are another. In fact there is reason to claim them:

formed in Horley, Surrey (UK) in the autumn of 1981 by brothers Chris and Graham Mitchell together with their best friend Matthew Venn. They started writing songs and by March 1982 they recorded their first two songs at Rendezvous, John Ratcliff’s studio in the south of London. Their debut on stage took place at Brighton’s Kensington Arms public house in April 1982, followed by dates at The Cartoon Club in Croydon, The Richmond in Brighton, and The Half Moon in Herne Hill. In January or February 1983 they recorded another two songs and released their first 4 track cassette ep. With most of their work centred on some of London’s top venues and earning respect from their many followers as a brilliant live band, they constantly played gigs from Brighton to Bradford. In September 1984, joined by saxophonist Ron Howe, they recorded and put out their first vinyl release, the ‘Summer House’ b/w ‘Through Flak & Flak’ 7”. Shortly after Ron would also join The Cure for their ‘The Head On The Door’ album sessions.

....No mention of Keane from Bexhill area anywhere unless I overlooked it. Pretty successful, nost memorable track for me was "Sovereign Light Cafe". Sovereign Light itself now removed but cafe still there.

Just jumping back into this thread. Around the time that the Drivers were performing around Sussex there was a great covers band - the Blunter Brothers - who performed mainly at the Ravenswood and Wire Mills. Notable for their size they specialised in soul classics covers, not sure if they had own their material as well. The full team included a brass section, backing vocalists and an accomplished front man who did justice to the material. Any memories??

Probably too late for this thread as their debit album was around 2004. I was going for Easyworld from Eastbourne but they are also too late.

Anyone on here remember Temple who played around the Lewis area in the 70s? One of my old mates was the lead singer.

Is Keane not later than 80s?

(That is my way of pretending I knew Keane was Sussex. I didn't.)

I have under the iron sea in my CD collection and absolutely love it.
I deal with Keane like I deal with Madonna.
I absolutely love their music and preclude any disillusion by learning nothing about them.
If I don't know whether they are tosses (I have my suspicions) then my love for the music can't be tainted.
