William Hill, the founder of the bookmaking chain, was in the Black & Tans. Supposedly once told the great Vincent O'Brien, who had just landed a successful gamble, that "I should have shot you when I had the chance".

Funnily enough, the marketing department of William Hill plc do not play too heavily on this fascinating bit of history when attempting to attract new clients in the ROI.

There was a horse called Black and Tan a few years ago, wasn't much good IIRC.

I believe it's the name of a now disbanded regiment in the British army who were notoriously brutal, especially whilst serving in Ireland before the Republic was formed.

The sort of thing which means little to us Brits but ios a very sore point in Ireland.

Very interesting& not hard to see why the Irish would get so irate. Oh, and sorry, not an army regiment.
