By the seaside in West Somerset
Sitting at home enjoying a few beers and playing some music.
Can't help realising that my musical collection pretty much ends with the 70's and although I've got some more recent bits and pieces like Christine & The Queens; Hozier; Lukas Graham and so on I really don't have a clue what is considered "current" and worth listening to.

So perhaps the musical literati of NSC who haven't got better things to do could recommend some acts worth downloading so I can try to get myself up to speed?

If you fancy something a bit mellow and Nick Drake-tinged then try LA Salami, a ridiculously talented young bloke from Hackney.

If you're after something with a bit more meat to it and a voice that will blow you away then another Londoner Michael Kiwanuka is a good shout. This song is a slow burner and really kicks in after 6 mins

I don't know if Canadian singer Frazey Ford is particularly hip but she released a cracking album last year with this belter on it

Woodkid is a young French bloke who moved to Swindon and I'm hoping he becomes a big name soon. It's worth checking out all his videos and also the acoustic versions

And lastly 2 more Canadian acts that have great wit and clever tunes, The Burning Hell and Timbre Timber.

I'd have a quick shufti at the 2016 albums thread - loads of recommendations on there. I'd say about 80% of them have no appeal for me at all but there are some real gems there too

Two recent albums by artists who have been around forever that prove they've still got it and then some are Paul Simon and Leonard Cohen. I reckon that the Paul Simon could almost be as good as Gracelands.

If all this is too downtempo and you fancy a boogie around the living room then Shamir's your man.

Metronomy if you want to pull some great shapes on the dancefloor.

That's a shame. I try hard in that thread to post albums that I like and I hope others will too, I hope it doesn't across as a bit cliquey or obscure. I hope I've got a few successes with the ones I've gone for here.

I think all the ones I have liked have been yours. Many others post a lot of techno dance music that leaves me cold - the perils of old age

Haley Bonar, The Duke Spirit, Agnes Obel, Olafur Arnalds, Daughter, The Unthanks and Phil Collins.

Agnes Obel and Daughter. Yes. Thank you.
Olagur Arnalds is well strange. Might just have to revisit that.

Been listening to The Unthanks for years. Have you tried Kate Rusby or Katrine Polwart?
.......and Phil Collins is older than me!! :lolol:

It's a matter of taste though and it is picking up on those points where both yours and someone else's bisect. I listen to a number of radio shows online and if I find I like 20% of the playlist then that's considered a very good week. As someone who can be a bit obscure in their tastes the main reason I post is in the hope that somebody else may like it too, but then to me music has always been about sharing.
