We were second when the all the Saturday fixtures had been completed and any tables published after those games in Sunday papers etc would show us as such, that's good enough for me.

We wouldn't be worrying about the semantics of it if we were second with just a game to go and Liverpool were third but had two games left, we'd still be second. Yes I know we've only played two games etc etc, but it's the first time we've ever started a top flight season with back to back wins, so lets just enjoy it.

Next weekend Liverpool host Chelsea in the 17.30 Saturday game, a win for us against Everton could put us top for a few minutes at least, and if they end up in a draw, for a whole week. I am hoping the question of do we count second on an incomplete fixture list becomes irrelevant, and Tony Bloom can sing "we are top of the league" in his old mates face at Brentford.

Edit, it will actually be a fortnight we sit there, if we end up on top after next weekend.

Spurs and possibly West Ham or Leicester will also be on 6 points tonight.
They all have 'easier' games than us next weekend, so could quite easily get a better GD.

Even with a win, and a Chelsea/Liverpool draw we could be 3rd after next weekend.

Bollocks! We're just enjoying it while it lasts! - and why shouldn't we?

Enjoy it all you like, I just personally can't see the point in celebrating a false position (that arguably relates more to Brentford after their win against Arsenal, to be fair).

Just a bit of a laugh isnt it.

Cant see any downside myself

To some people it's not though. The kind of people who, if the team goes on a bad run and falls to the bottom half, will call for 'POTTER OUT' stating that 'We were second in the table a few weeks/months ago and NOW look, FFS!'

Heaven forbid the team plummets even further. Can you IMAGINE some Palace fans if Brighton got relegated after Lording it over the rest of the division after 180 minutes of football? :ffsparr:

I think we were were top of the table on August 17 2019 at 3.28pm when Trossard's goal v West Ham was given by the ref. We then had 6 points in the live table
At 3.30pm it was ruled out by VAR and that was that...

Apologies if fixtures, but we've been discussing it at work.

Previous to the weekend it was always December 1981, when we'd won 2-0 at The Dell and were 4th, obviously that's been usurped, but do we take the position, 2nd, on Saturday night, or 3rd after all the full set of fixtures had been completed?

Carlisle United were famously top of the old First Division in August 1974, when they beat Chelsea and Tottenham in the first two matches, and many of their fans class that as their highest ever position.

6th after the Southampton match (although having played one or two more than most around us).

3rd October Albion were 5th after six matches.

For historical comparison it has to be 3rd (or 4th) as in those days all games were played at the same time. TO say we were 2nd is a bit like if we had looked at the live table after an opening day win.

Also, in those days I don't think they even published the league until two or three games. Has anyone checked where we would be if we ever won the first game of the season in 79/80-82/83 or did this never happen?

EDIT 16th August 1980 we beat Wolves 2-0 in the first game of the season. Can't see how to find the other results but could that have put us higher than 5th?

Talking of league positions, I'd like to know how many clubs we have never finished above. I saw this discussed on that dreadful Palace forum where I see they have never finished above just Liverpool or Arsenal - entirely down to that third place fluke they had in the 90s.

For us, I'm guessing there are about 10 clubs we've never finished above. It would be superb to finally finish above Arsenal, especially if Palace don't.

I think the answer is just three, Man Utd, Liverpool and Arsenal. We've also never finished above Spurs in the football league, but we did once when we were both in the Southern League.

If Aston Villa, Brentford and Arsenal get relegated this year and the current top 3 get promoted from the Championship, then I shall regard 23rd May 2022 as our highest finish.

That's correct

In our first season 79-80,we finished above Everton

Who actually finished 4th from bottom

I don't care what you think, we were second when we left the Amex Saturday night.
Today we are third and Tuesday it may be 4th. I'm happy that we can say that rather than be looking up from an Arsenal position.
Points on the board.

Forget the arguments! 3rd in table right now is just fine for me. Just placed a bet at 22/1 on relegation - so I can spend the rest of the season relaxing knowing that I wont win £450 and that Brighton will enjoy a 6th season in the Premier League at the very least. You see....... I do have self awareness and have for most of my life just had to accept that I am a born loser!

It was nice to mention to friends on Sunday that we were 2nd but the only thing that matters is our relation to the tracker
