yes I'm not panicking yet, still plenty of time. but a new striker *at some point* this window is an absolute necessity. massive risk going without one, maupay gets injured next season and we're absolutely finished.

We've been light up top all year!

Has anyone mentioned Batshauyi, does not ever get a chance at Chelsea.

and also injury/suspension free all year

The transfer window is open for weeks yet! I would be quite happy to start the season with what we have if we have to. The signings we need have to be chosen wisely. No need to rush into a bad decision.

4 1/2 weeks could just about be called "weeks" but it isn't actually that long.

Again ? Weren't Maupay, Murray and Hemed our main striker targets in recent years ?
And hadn't we tracked Andone for years ?

Agree. It could very well just have been the case that the bidding war for Nunez had started first and we therefore felt it was the right time to make a move. There were rumours of an offer from Southampton weeks before us (derisory though it allegedly was). It could also be the case that the bidding war for our 'main' target (perhaps someone more expensive than Nunez) hasn't started yet

There is a balance to be struck between being ultra cautious and conservative in our approach (danger: all half decent strikers get mopped up by competitors leaving the cupboard bare) and spunking absurd money due to agent driven artificially inflated fees for average players (danger: Locadia). I trust the club and in TB we surely have the ultimate gamer but the danger of playing the long game is that we're left with the crumbs from the (artificially) rich men's table as all our targets are mopped up by others because they are more prepared to take the risk/pay the inflated fees.

On this I wholeheartedly agree with you. Better to get it right, if that takes a bit more time so be it...... obvs Nunez was the one we have been pursuing, now thats gone, no need for kneejerk choices.

The problem is that strikers are the position everyone is after. All of our direct rivals in the PL are trying, almost certain that anybody we identify as decent is going to be wanted by others too, as soon as X gets wind Y is moving for a target hijacking can occur and many agents will be actively playing that game.

If it was a more generic position, they're wouldnt be such neccessity. everyone wants strikers and seasons will live or die by goals scored. Plenty of time yet, certainly no panic but if we get to the window closing with broadly what we have or Gykores as the back up, Bloom is taking the biggest gamble so far. Maupay gets injured or loses form, we will be staring down the barrel imho

Agreed. It's not only injuries either, but suspensions too. Another referee may have taken a different view on Maupay's challenge on Leno and carded him. The club clearly know there's a need, or they wouldn't have chased Nunez. Secondly, on the small vs tall striker issue, no, I don't think we need a lump like Rodriguez or Carroll up front, but someone who is able to win the ball in the air and score headed goals is very useful. If we only have small strikers, that means we are reliant on through balls or fast balls banged along the ground into the six-yard box. Other sides will quickly realise this and work to cut this supply out. The last time we tried to go a whole season with small strikers was 2014-2015, with Baldock and Colunga. Baldock came into his own once he had first Hemed and then Murray to play off.

The other thing is that the better sides employed the high press against us, often to profitable effect. Having a tall forward provides an outlet away from this, in other words an extra form of defence, in that you can clear it long to him, and he will hopefully either hold the ball up or win a foul. Murray was a past master at this. Even if you give a foul away, it gives you the chance to regroup. Otherwise you are forced to play the ball out of defence. The only error I can recall Webster making since the restart was when he tried to play the ball out against Liverpool and gave it to Jordan Henderson, resulting in their second goal. I know this is the way Potter wants us to play, but at least with a tall player you have the option to clear long.

Not disputing that, but if left to the last minute will be left with the crumbs off the floor? and if a player signs from abroad we might have to factor a 2 week quarantine period and a week or two training with the squad to get up to speed.

The 4 and a half weeks could ultimately become 7 or 8 weeks if a European player is signed very late in the day. Can we wait that long? Just hoping Maupay and Connolly stay fit.

Don't forget, we were just a stepping stone for Locadia to er, the MLS!!

Losing out on Nunez is a tough one but I believe that if we’d really wanted him, we could have landed him. I think we’d have gone beyond £22m if we thought he was worth it.

I think Edouard is out of our price range and that we’ll avoid the EPL Watkins bidding war.

So it’s maybe a Swede, Columbian or giant Wurst-Werthog from the Bundesliga, Oh-Dia from France or someone else from Spain.
Valencia have a sale on at the moment, I hope we’re keeping an eye on it!

Like I said. I'd be happy to start the season with what we have.
