I wonder what percentage of those using food banks are spending a large proportion of their money on luxuries?

I did some voluntary work for fareshare and it was astounding how much food was not sold from supermarkets. Good to see some charities working on that front, rather than the food going to waste.

We should be 'ashamed' that people in need are being provided with food? How strange.
We should be ashamed that there is a need for food banks and that the number of people using them has risen by 200k in the last 2 years yes

There would be no need to provide them if one got off one's fat arse and worked.

Or, even if one chooses not to work (it seems you can in this country still) they would have plenty for food if their FREE HANDOUTS of TAX payers CASH was not wasted on:-

Ironic that the UN is warning the UK about food banks and yet they are happy to let the Syrians massacre each other.

I think you'll find that it is only Russia who is happy to let the Syrians massacre each other. Their veto leaves the UN powerless to do anything...

Because £75 a week JSA easily pays for all of that with change to spare ???

Newbury, Berkshire.
The UN doesn't have any mandate to intervene in Civil wars.

It took the creation of IFOR to form a peace-keeping force for Bosnia, and that was at the instigation of the European Union and NATO.

the UN is a talking shop, not a Military Superpower.

I wouldn't bother, the percentage is absolutely tiny. It really is true that some sections of the media wildly exaggerate these stories.

I live on the doorstep of a small town (Merstham) which according to a respected local charity, houses 10% of the Surrey's population in poverty and these food banks are essential. The problem is caused by drugs, such that kids don't get fed sufficiently because of the scale of benefits being used to feed drug user's habits. This is why food banks are so important.

If you want to "wonder" about social injustice, my suggestion would be to concentrate your efforts on the spongers in the aristocracy (especially royalty) and some others among the super rich who think nothing of avoiding their social responsibility by paying pitifully small amounts of tax.

The number of food banks is about to increase quite significantly........

From April 1st the Govt have deployed to local councils a scheme known as 'The Social Fund', currently being run by the DWP. In short we are talking about £500m to be given out where applicants have a crisis, a bit more to it than that but that's the basis of it. I'm dealing with a number of Council's on this and the majority are setting up food banks & food voucher schemes, rather than just give some cash away, as the DWP currently do.

There are definitely people in this country who are in a position to milk the system to this extent - no argument from me there. However, I'd respectfully ask you to look at the numbers involved here. A RISE (not actual value) of 200,000 people a year now using food banks from a population of 60,000,000. Clearly, the vast majority of these people do not fit into the bone idle sponger bracket you are highlighting.

There's no shame in having food banks. Much better to have them giving out unwanted food that otherwise will end up rotting in a landfill or being incinerated.

and the millions of average middle class people who have until recently been basically unnecessarily claiming child benefit simply because they feel 'well we have paid in and everyone else gets it', and 'i cant afford to pay for childcare' (you can you would just be worse off), a set of bizarre and utterly self absorbed attitudes.
