Probably a thread already but I couldn't see it.

The teacher three doors along mate has just called for him and they have gone off on their bikes!

Took a day's leave before the strike was officially called - shame really as I do enjoy a good "chat" with the pickets !!

How far along the street do you have the houses bugged?

I'm not on strike, but i have booked the day off. During that time, i don't intend to try listening in to every conversation around me in order to reinforce a right-wing ire that festers inside. I'll probably read or cycle on down to a demonstration or two to see what's going on.

My wife is a teacher and she is in work today. She has already started, unlike what the papers like to tell everyone that a teachers jobs is easy and they gets lots of holiday and a pension of half a million pounds a year.

My wife is also a teacher at work today - there are enough of them not on strike that the school has remained open (it helps that there are kids off on exam leave and work experience!).

It's a hard job but I don't think you can argue with the facts that that the holidays are great and that the pension scheme is pretty ridiculously amazing.

My union are off on strike today for first time in 127 years. I had already booked the day off so won't officially be on strike.

I'm not sure my pension pot is that amazing. Will get 25/80 of average salary on retirement. I fully accept that will have to work longer and contribute more, but the government are negotiating with one hand, making public announcements another, and David Willetts is selling out higher education to factory farm US training companies at the same time.

Exactly. They have nothing to moan about. It's parents who get the thin end of the wedge in respect of picking up the fall out of 'inset days' (why can't this be done in school holidays, they didn't have them when i was a kid), strikes etc. Nobody doubts they do a great job but the perks are already in line with that.

Agreed - why the parents have to pay for this defies belief. Bet a lot of people are not at my work today as they have to look after their kids. The knock on effect (which is what the teachers are going after I'm sure) is really making them look like arses.

There's a lot of people who "took the day off before the strike was announced". Really? On a random Thursday? Or not willing / scared to cross the picket lines?

More than willing to cross the pickets - nobody will stop me doing what I want to do but I have things planned today as I'm off on holiday in a couple of days time so took today and tomorrow off as there's lots to do. I usually do

Lovely day for it. Do you have to be in a union?

I was on strike earlier this year when in UCU, but so pissed off with the union leadership I left the union and joined ATL instead.

Term finished at Uni last Friday, I have an annual leave to take during the student vacation period and took some of it this week.

For clarity, is that your current pension or the proposed one, as we are told teachers are on final salary pensions?
