Have you ever lived abroad? Every country has its issues, us included of course. But, believe it or not, we are one of the most tolerant countries in the world, be it with regards to religion, race or sexuality. It doesn't feel like it sometimes, and there's still a lot of work to be done, but we absolutely are.

Loads of other stuff to recognise too that others have pointed out.

It must be pretty tiring being so negative all the time.

Wow, I had that and wore it away to York in the 90s, pretty sure we lost, and got criticised by Albion fans in a pub before the game for wearing it.

In this country you find people who are kind, smart, thoughful, bright, fun, trustworthy, helpful and amusing. Lots of them. In my travels I have found it rare to meet all of these in individuals.

I love the cautious hope, the infrequency of hubris, the increasing care for the environment (and I mean starting with not chucking cans and crisp packets all over the place at every beauty spot like we saw in the 60s) and the fact that we still have decent politicians - better than those in many other countries (albeit the number of hubristic charlatans continues to be higher than I'd like).

Could I have lived elsewhere? Yes.

Regrets? I've had a few. But then again, too few to mention.

Of course there are always exceptions to the rule but generally I think we are mostly polite and have nice manners. We queue properly in the main, let people through and say after you, say please and thank you and sorry when it is not always our fault.

Our Rights of Way network (I have to say this because I look after them, but of course there is a reason I look after them) - yes, in other countries there may be some better paths or more ability to wander, but here we are unique in having paths across privately owned land to get to places, all looked after by the public for the public. There is nowhere else in the world where you can go anywhere in the country, buy a map and set off for a wander from wherever you are staying, across fields and woods to the pub, even though you have never been there before - in the knowledge that you are pretty safe and allowed to be there.

None, of course.

How easily we lose sight of all this. What an enigma Britain will seem to historians when they look back on the second half of the twentieth century. Here is a country that fought and won a noble war, dismantled a mighty empire in a generally benign and enlightened way, created a far-seeing welfare state - in short, did nearly everything right - and then spent the rest of the century looking on itself as a chronic failure. The fact is that this is still the best place in the world for most things - to post a letter, go for a walk, watch television, buy a book, venture out for a drink, go to a museum, use the bank, get lost, seek help, or stand on a hillside and take in a view.

All of this came to me in the space of a lingering moment. I've said it before and I'll say it again. I like it here. I like it more than I can tell you.”
