We had an adder in the back garden once when I was a NIPPER.

Funnily enough they seemed to be more prevalent in the countryside when I was growing up too. I guess it's a case of FANGS ain't what they used to be...

When I was about 12, I went to the place in Hassocks where they do further Education stuff, on a photography course.
They trotted out this chap who was German and supposed to be a famous Wildlife Game photographer. He did a bit of theory in the classroom and then we all went up on the downs for a practical outside lesson with our box brownies.
He pulled a few stones out of the way,(zis is were we vind snakes.) Low and behold he found an Adder, and proceeded to show us the difference between an an Adder and a Grass snake.
Be vera carefull Zey are Veere dangerous, Zis is how you pick Zem up! Showing us the thumb and forfinger behind the head method!
Ouch! I haff been bitten!
He then sat down and explained to us that he had to walk back slowly ,so that the venom didn't travel round his body.
Being Kids we were too busy laughing behind his back at the mighty Wild Game photographer being bitten by an ordinary English adder.
To this day I don't know what his name was and whether he survived.

Our cat ran across the garden with a pretty big snake in its mouth the other day. (No where as near thick as the one in that picture, mind).

Only caught a glimpse but it was a cream sort of colour.

Was quite surprised.

I trod on one in Toads Hole well on the slope down to it when I was about 12. It slithered off and appeared to be injured/mauled already. We used to collect lizards in tupperware boxes in those days I got quite experts at catching them in the long grass. They used to shed their tails if that was the bit you grabbed. I remember seeing one kid with a bite mark on his arm from an adder, but someone told me later there was no trace of venom found in the wound. The scariest thing was coming face to face with a young deer by what Hangletoners called the violet patch which is roughly where the by-pass in now I literally bumped into it whilst walking near by with some pals, near as much shit my self! Great days. Anyone from that way remember the flasher who was accosted by an enraged Mother with a pair of garden shears he literally ran all the way to and over snakey apparently:laugh:

Silly bugger should have left them well alone or wacked the fuckers with a spade!

Best way to do it is go up behind them with a spade and get their head pinned down with the spade blade.

Once that's done you just stand on the shovel like you would when digging up some dirt and off comes their head.

That's very un Christian, they're still God's creatures.
