No doubt this has been done before, but what are your views on the forthcoming ban on smoking in public places?

I smoke and do want the ban. It is bloody annoying having smoke in your face or ash on your clothes when you are watching the football. Does it really take much willpower to wait for half time and/or full time? Very antisocial. There would be no need for the ban to be enofrced properly if people smoked away from others. Plenty of spots around Withers to stand in the fresh air and smoke away from others.

Smoking in restaurants as well. Although I smoke, I don't particularly want to breath in smoke when I am eating. More often than not when in the pub, I nip outside for a cigarette.

Yeah it worked well in New Zealand when I was there. Haven't had a cigarette for a year and a half now, but I was still smoking when they bought it in over there. So much better, your clothes dont stink and you smoke about a third as much as you would normally.

I actually like the smell of smoke at football, goes with the pies, rain etc.

Football stadia aren't classed as enclosed here, so you can still smoke; although the GAA voluntarily got Croke Park classed as enclosed, so after November theres no smoking at Ireland home games for at least a year... and no more terraces, ever :(

Well as an exsmoker I don't want the ban, I think that smokers pay enough tax so I don't see why they're always penalised. I would want smoking and distinctly NON smoking venues however.

Yeah but the problem with that is if the smoking venues are better!

Good post. I smoke, but think I am considerate to others when doing so. I rarely smoke during a game at Withdean and do prefer non smoking restaurants.

The biggest downer for me however, will be the ban in pubs. Fags and beer belong together like cheese and pickle:p

I was in Ireland recently and having to go outside (or into a shed in one pub) every time I wanted a smoke was a right pain.

With the loss of revenue in tax are they sure this will be off-set by the the increase in savings in the NHS due to fewer smokers being admitted?

Thats the theory but not actually the truth. The revenue from Cigarette tax is considerably more than smoking related illness costs the NHS, even ASH don't dispute that oddly enough.

According to anti-smoking group ASH, tax revenue in this country from smoking is approximately £10.5 billion per annum. The estimated cost to the NHS from smoking every year is about £1.7 billion.

But then going outside helps a lot of smokers cut down and the majority inside can enjoy a smoke free atmosphere.Seems to work in Ireland and New York etc ...................more space for DRINKING AND:dance:
