If you cancel do you still get the Freeview channels through the dish and box? Reason is we can't get Freeview through the aerial in Lewes.

I was going to buy a bar in Cyprus in 1995 and everybody out there had sky for the football most of which came through a card obtained for a domestic premises in UK. If you use use one of those in pub in this country sky know and prosecute you why can they not do the same in Cyprus and probably Spain and the Canary Islands.

Hiney - effectively yes they do know, in fact I'm surprised they weren't asking for a full sub for the second box due to lack of dialbacks...

Peter Grummit - you get a range of channels but not the same as Freeview; you get Freesat. Biggest losses are E4 and More4; but you still get all the BBCs, ITVs, Fives, Film4, Sky News etc - and about 100 (mostly terrible) channels that aren't on Freeview. And way more radiio

Shegull - UPC who own NTL here now are quite a lot better than old NTL were...

Because they didn't know about it. Sky will instantly deactivate any card they know is being used outside of the UK, Ireland, Isle of Man or Channel Islands.

As it is its very hard to get the digital signal in Cyprus or the Canary Islands anyway.

Cheers mate.

We have never been able to get ITV4 which has never really bothered me but I see that quite a lot of the egg-chasing is on there shortly. Is there anything I can do about this, given that I have already given notice to Sky and am past the 12 month 'free maintenance' period?

What about people who legitimately pay for sky at their home and then travel Europe in a campervan with satelite dish, digi box card etc.

Well I have NTL in town and I kid you not but I have to wait a good ten minutes for the digital to "search for data" as it says on the screen. Much prefer Sky - and from what I can see they work out cheaper as well.

Illegal (under contract not criminal law). You're not even allowed bring your UK setup to the Republic of Ireland or vice versa.

Didn't they try and do you a deal? I did the same and they offered me the full package that I had (Sports plus movies) which should have cost £42 a month, for £30 a month for 12 months.

They are just the same as mobile phone operators, if you haggle, there is scope.

It depends on who you speak to on the phone though or possibly what sort of mood their supervisor is in.

When I phoned to downgrade sky world to a lesser package, there was apparantly a deal to be done and I got a reduced rate for 3 months.

However, when I called to get broadband installed, not realising I'd missed their free installation as standard by 2 weeks, and would have to pay 30 quid for the install, there was no budging them. However, I'll try again on that one nearer Christmas and see what's on the cards.

At the foot of the downs
You guys must watch a LOT of telly to justify £400 odd quid a year. Freeview is more than enough for me.

Quality not quantity

Basically, Sky have the rights to broadcast what we know as Sky TV to the UK (and ROI?) only. You are correct, you can have a Sky card and box registered in the UK, and take it out there with you, but it must remain registered in the UK and you must keep paying the subscription in the UK.

As for the reception, that is why they have such huge dishes over there. The broadcast 'band' is so narrow to keep it focused on the UK only that you need a much much bigger diameter dish over there to receive the Sky transmission. My brother lives in Larnaca and has a dish well over 2m in diameter, but even then he can't receive BBC or ITV as those transmissions have been squeezed even more, but he can still get Sky. He is looking to upgrade to an even bigger dish, in fact I think he has it on order, so as he can get BBC again.

They used to receive the Premiership matches on the British Forces Broadcasting Service (BFBS) but then the Cypriot digital satellite company took the hump because they were transmitting Premiership games. Consequently everyone was dumping their Digital Satellite services and watching it on BFBS. Now BFBS transmit on a really low power to ensure you can only tune in to it if you are on a British Military base, and then the locals have to sign up to the CY Digital service. Or get a huge dish and get Sky if they know someone in the UK they can use as their "mule" as it were.

Ultimately, Sky would cancel a subscription if they found it being used abroad, but realistically, so long as the subscription is registered in the UK and is being paid for, why would they bother to look for the culprits? It would only serve to piss people off if they couldn't get their Sky telly on hols, and then risk them taking the hump when they get back and switching to Virgin.

Like I said, Sky have the rights to the UK, and so long as they appear to be upholding that and doing their best to prevent thier services being received outside the UK, then no-one is really going to try and stop you in CY, Spain, or anywhere.

As for the pub thing, that is a totally different licensing thing, which costs a lot more (part of the Premiership contract). That is why you get a little beer glass on the bottom right of the screen on pub TVs, it ensures at a glance for any inspectors that the landlord has paid the full "Pub" subscription.

Afernoon Superphil,

Can I ask one question. Whilst in the shithole that is commonly lnown as Dover, the pubs had the Sky Premiership games on, but whith slightly different graphics for the time, scores etc. However, the programme was "For use in Northern Greece only" which rolled across the screen at irregular intervals, and there were Greek adverts.

Last year, all the pubs in Dover had exactly the same set up, but rather than Greek, it was Saudi television.

I have just got back from Crete, and when Football was shown on Sky, the message kept coming up "This Match is only Licenced to be shown in Greece"...whats all that about then if Sky is only Focussed on the UK?

SuperSport from Greece. Also as "illegal" to have in that SuperSport aren't allowed to see cards to the UK

In theory EU goods and services laws allow free movement and all that but it would be an expensive, expensive challenge. The coverage is the same as the images and often commentary are done by a firm called TWI and sold to Sky + anyone else that will pay.

It was the Sky commentators, and everyone in the Ellie was stating how annoying the found Andy Gray.

I wonder if the Greeks feel the same.:lolol:
