I don't get the outrage really at £15. These are games that sky aren't showing otherwise and that nobody would be able to see. But it costs money to show and the club is taking a cut as well.

It's simple economics but it means we can all watch the football

Of course it's not the same as live but if that's not an option why not at least have this as an option instead?

I respect your difference of opinion, but it’s a bit lazy to say you don’t understand. As if you’ve not been paying attention to almost universal condemnation and the reasons for doing so across football, by fans, media etc

Your apparent indifference reminds me of that famous quote “I did not say anything, when they came for...” Well, when the games finally killed itself, I suppose you can look back with pride at your part in it. Something to tell the grandkids when you getogether to watch the Miami Seacows take on their bitter rivals The Xian Clays at 1am in the Facebook Final. Don’t forget to get the wings and some bud delivered in. It’ll be so exciting, especially as the Clays are hoping to make it 12 titles in a row...

Sky, BT and the PL have got this strategy so wrong....

I'm not sure Sky have got it wrong. They advertise Now TV day passes offering a couple of English Premier League games plus all the other sport for about 2/3 of the price of PPV. While the broadcasters have been quick to blame the PL for the pricing, it's better for them than it doesn't undermine their own existing product - which was surely taken into account.

Absolutely this.

Sky and BT know what they're doing.
Best thing for them is PPV to fail and the Prem allowing all games to be available to subscription.
Then the broadcasters can increase the price of their more valuable product and give some of the profit back to the Prem.

Anyone thinking that the options are between PPV and Free games to existing subscribers are being naive.

Do BT really only have 3 Premier League games for November?

I can only see:
- Everton v Man Utd
- Newcastle v Chelsea
- Brighton v Liverpool

That's a massive part of the problem though. The internet has meant for years there have been avenues to safely watch Premier League games that aren't being broadcast in this country for no extra cost. The PL are asking you to pay even more money on top of your current subscription for something that a large majority (70% of fans according to the anonymous Athletic poll) are not going to. And what do you get for spending £14.95 on a "premium product"? Well according to our CEO that just means multi-camera. No half-time show, no pre-match or post-match and on Sky, adverts throughout the half-time break. In comparison, watching SuperSport in South Africa you get pundits like Ian Wright and Alan Shearer (the same as Match of the Day) doing an entire pre and post match analysis and the exact same broadcast as PPV.

I would much prefer to pay for the product and over the years have happily paid out far too much on Sky and BT to see us occasionally through the proper channels but this feels like the PL are attempting to get a lot extra out of fans on top of that and justifying it by saying "it's the only way to watch by following the rules that we're setting." Including the Palace game by playing within the rules, the cheapest it will cost is £95 to watch 6 games (SS day pass, BT online 1 month, PPV). That's around the same price per game as a season ticket at West Ham.

Quite likely - their season deal is for 68 games in total

Surely PPV is hurting them quite badly... I obviously understand that for them it is about a subscriber base, but I'm sure there are plenty like myself who subscribed to watch the additionally screened Premier League games, have been impressed by their coverage but have no interest in paying for a product that doesn't actually show any games I want to watch.

I wouldn't think so - PPV is only being applied to the games that weren't going to be shown in the UK. How many would cancel their subscriptions and instead pay say £75/mth to watch 5 games at £15 a pop on PPV ?

So cost to watch Albion at home for a season on the sofa

Now TV - £33 x 9 months = £303
BT - £10 x 12 = £120 (min 12 month commit)
PPV games = £15 x 20 = £300

£723, do I have that about right?

No, I understand and agree, but there must have been a lot of people like myself who got a BT monthly subscription when it was announced that all games were going to be broadcast and now will be saving £25 a month instead? I am not paying for PPV but I'm also not paying for BT Sport if that is all that they're offering.

Only if we have 20 games on TV that aren't PPV - unlikely......think it's usually 11-12 - so on that basis we'd need PPV for 26 games (if it continues after the current trial). BT Sport for a tenner is also dependent on the package you already have ?

BT would be £25/month for me - 9 x £25 = £225.

Plus Amazon for some (which I already have).

So £813 to watch Albion on TV in an empty stadium, more than any standard ST

In Australia they are charged AUD15 / month (£8) for all PL games, oh and all CL games as well. That's 1/11 of what of the UK price.

Where will it all end?

Not quite that simple as that would include all away games as well..............PPV won't continue as it's currently being offered anyway. Broadcasters don't want it, fans think it's too expensive and take-up is reportedly very low. The overseas comparison doesn't really work for me, it's not really relevant - I wouldn't pay to watch the top tier of Aussie football (or any other country for that matter) unless it was a fraction of the price of 'home' coverage.

Fair comment on the away games

But Aussie football isn't a global product, the PL most certainly is. Why should an Albion fan pay 10 times more than those residing overseas in other first world countries? Little surprise people are turning to streams...

I respect your difference of opinion, but it’s a bit lazy to say you don’t understand. As if you’ve not been paying attention to almost universal condemnation and the reasons for doing so across football, by fans, media etc

Anyone with a Sky or BT subscription has already played there part in changing the face of football and it has turned into a show for many viewing fans. Fans who actually attend games know this already and that they are considered lower in the pecking order.

Some of these changes have been good in the short term but once you sell your soul then be prepared to be led where the profit is rather than the football.

PPV is just another rung up the profit making ladder but as has been said it does offer the opportunity to watch games you might not have other wise seen legally and that comes with a price.

Is PPV going to remain after the lockdown ends , I would guess probably if money is made. I suspect PPV will be used to kill off fans going to away games , big six clubs could easily sell those £30 tickets for treble that and would need less police and stewards and of course would sell more merchandise.
