[Technology] Sky Q mini box connection when not using Sky broadband.

I've had a brilliant offer from my local fibre broadband provider that stomps all over what I currently get from Sky. However, I do like the Sky Q tv product.

My query is that I understand that when using a 3rd party broadband provider the connection from the main Sky Q box to a mini box does not work in the same way and can be problematical.

Has anyone had this issue and come up with a solution that avoids running Ethernet cable? My new provider would be Lightning Fibre who I'm aware use Zyxel routers.

Many thanks for any help

Not had any issues with my setup. I’ve not had Sky internet for a number of years.

I believe the boxes create their own hidden WiFi network to talk to each other. Providing the main box is connected to your new isp router (via Ethernet or WiFi) you shouldn’t have any problems accessing the online services etc via the mini.

You may need to run the network discovery on the mini to connect it to the main box when your new fibre is installed. The Sky website has a step by step guide on how to do it.

During the pandemic I had both Virgin and Sky Broadband installed, long story.

However when I was fiddling around with routers and cables the Q box was often connected to the Virgin with no issues.

I've dumped the Virgin now, but am looking at another London cable operator at the moment.

That said at my mums place I had the mini box in her bedroom. Always bloody problematic generally and was constantly resetting it.

That ran over a non Sky broadband.

Had Sky Q for several years and never had their broadband, and its always worked fine.

I think if you have Sky broadband the mini boxes act as wifi hotspots so you dont get that functionality, but for the TV services everything works well.

I have two sky minis and BT fibre broadband with a deco mesh system. The minis do disconnect now and again and need to be reset which is a pain.
