Think it's time I upgraded to Sky plus but ideally would like to avoid the £150 charge from Sky to do this. So was thinking of looking for a 2nd hand set on Ebay.

What I want to know is ( because i'm a technophobe )

1.) Can I still use my exisiting Sky card or does Sky Plus come with a different card.

2.) Is it easy to install.

3.) What else should I be looking out for if buying 2nd hand box.

I'm sure I can probably get a fairly good 2nd hand off Ebay !

There were a lot of problems with certain makes of old sky+ boxes, mainly to do with picture freezing and sound glitches making watching recorded programs a nightmare.

It would be last thing I'd risk buying on eBay

Its not as simple as just a new box as you need to replace the LNB on the dish with one that has two lines which need to be fed to the back of the sky plus box so that you have the ability to record one channel and watch another.

The card is the same but you have to have sky plus activiated by sky on it which will cost 10 a month unless you have either sky movies or sky sports in your package.

You'll probably end up paying the best part of £100 for a second hand box and the kit you need so you're probably bette roff just paying the money for it. If you complain about being charged more than new customers for sky plus and kick up a fuss you will probably be able to blag yourself a few months of free subscription anyway.

I paid £150 for my sky plus but had a moan about the fact new customers get a good deal and all that and they gave me three months free subscrption which is worth about £120 so couldn't grumble.

We paid £90 ish as part of a deal that provides a second Sky box to another room. You do have to pay an extra £10 a month on your subscription but we find that it's worth it. (I can watch sport downstairs whilst the boss watches countless cooking programs in our bedroom).

As already mentioned you are given new cards. I wouldn't attempt to do it myself though. The engineer was with us for a fair while.

Has anyone had experience of what Sky do if the Sky+ box fails after the 1 year warranty? I signed up to a deal for a further year a couple of months back after having the box for 1 year. I didn't buy the extended warranty (which I never do on anything on principle) but just wondered whether Sky would give me a replacement box if mine went faulty?

anyone got the Virgin version of this and is it any good?

Is there any point in investing in this as the On Demand service has almost every show on it going?

I've read about people that have paid £65 and been given a replacement refurbished Sky+ box.
