Gordon Brown is probably the smartest prime minister we've ever had (bar Macmillan?), and he was leading Europe out of Economic free-fall. However, he couldn't smile properly and unfortunately this coincided with a ridiculous Americanised Television debate. A debate that allowed three horses into what has been a traditional two horse race. In turn losing us one of the few men in the world that understands economics and politics well enough to get us out of this, and giving us a coalition Government of Media Trained idiots with no substance.

Gideon f***ing Osborne is a WANKER.

Swindon, but used to be Manila
I'm actually seeing a young lady who works for Top Shop (not just a branch, at their head office!) and she says he is everything you expect him to be. Slimy, rude, boorish, but also very, very rich. The bar-steward!

The people I work for look after his private Gulfstream jet...every time I have met him he seems decent enough....his wife however!!

No he hasn't. His employees have, that is not the same thing at all. That is like saying all the taxes of all the companies I have ever worked for, including all the taxes paid by the employees, can be counted as what I have paid.

Total bollocks.

'his employees' you said it, thousands...your employees sounds like zero

Nice to see some intelligent responses on this subject.

The hear and now is that, unlike previous recessions, this one is the straw that broke etc. And lets not forget just how much created cash is proping up the banks at increasing risk.

The government is still spending money it hasn't got. I wonder just how much of that is just to win elections.

I'm actually pleased with the local Greens response to this 2.5% council tax gimmick. Apparently other councils (two thirds Tories) are getting wise too. The shortfall is not going to be made up and subsidy withdrawn quickly next year-where will that leave the local tax payer? The government can say again 'Look weve kept your council tax down', without mentioning how this has crippled the already dwindling central governement grant.

I'm angry with Labour for their spending spree during the good times and I'm angry with the Tories for pissing about with the public finances by giving us back money we don't have anyway only to royally screw us up later.

Still as the heir to a multi million pound fortune Mr Osbourne tells us- "We are all in this together"...

No other conclusion. I don't understand why it has risen so sharply in the last three years though. This didn't happen in the 90s recession.

So do I. Without giving some sort of reason, it comes across as "I know best" to me. So what is wrong with Peston?

Sorry only just in from work. Why should I reply? It seems clear you are as interested in my opinion as Clapham Gull is.. Have you stopped to think that both or either of you are completely mis-reading my post? Seems you both think I'm some sort of smart alec or something...which truly is exceptionally odd as it was anything but.....

If by some chance anyone cares this explains where my opinion comes from BBC NEWS | UK | UK Politics | I did not cause Rock run - Peston

He has also been implicated for his reporting of the HBOS and Lloyds TSB merger and the impact on the share price immediately prior to the formal announcement. He has also been queried re his relationship with the Murdochs and the timing of his release of some News of the World scoops. The press seem to have been impressed with his efforts though and he has won many a journalistic prize, however personally I cannot abide journalism which has such catastrophic effects as his has done.

So and I'll use the term again, in my humble opinion I am not mad keen on listening to the chap.

Firstly it is 8 billion, which is a not inconsiderable sum (and could have been spent, say, to launch a massive private sector jobs push)

Secondly, economically it makes a massive difference. If you had that gold sitting in the BoE, there would be far less pressure on the UK's borrowing costs in the international financial markets. That would mean that you could ease off on deficit reduction whilst maintaining sustainable interest rates...

Yes this guy has become very wealthy, but he has also created thousands of jobs and opportunities along the way (no doubt a lot more than many of us). He's running a business.

He's even wealthier than Blair the 'socialist', but employs more people than Blair's bodyguards & former spin doctors.

And don't forget Brown's scrapping of dividend tax credits into pension schemes costing £100B in 13 years, robbed from ordinary peoples pension funds.
A system that had been in place from 1973 to ... 1997.
One of many stealth taxes, which slipped below the radar for those not in the know.

The accusations are nonsense though, they're from financial organisations looking for someone other than themselves to blame. Reckless and incompetent management caused NR to collapse, not someone pointing out their folly. What these organisations want of course is no-one to say anything bad about the markets or banks ever, because that would have a negative effect on the economy. What rubbish.

The NOTW accusation is even further nonsense. Iis there any evidence whatsoever that he was bias towards NI? Anything?

Peston became very famous for his 'scoops' for a while, was all over the media, got an ego the size of a house, then appeared to have some kind of breakdown last year and has been a bit off the wall since. All IMHO of course.
