As for Usain, I recognise him as a supremely fit athlete who excels in his field, but again, his field is merely running 100 metres. It's a task that, in my opinion, doesn't really require enormous amounts of skill or training. It's just repetition of the same ten seconds over and over again. And most importantly, it's not COMPETITIVE. For me, sport is two people or teams going directly up against each other. All these Olympic events where you simply post your best score and hope it's enough just don't command my respect.

He's not running against himself is he? In what way is it not competitive?

in last years World Championships we were treated to not only one of, if not, the best sprint races of all time, but probably one of the greatest sporting moments in time. Gay ran the third fasted time ever, i believe, and was never in the race. He smashed his own reecord and set a time that i didn't think was ever possible. If you can't appreciate how good this guy is you really do need to get your head checked out.

Shut up mate. I would like to see you try and do what Taylor does every single night. Darts is now a huge sport around the world, not like it was in the old days. The Tv coverage wasn't there as much as it is today, and for you call it a pub game well I would like to see you try and throw three darts at a dartboard infront of 10,000 people.

Well Said KEV!

Really not understanding some of people's opinions here. Surely if you are the best in the world at a sport that everyone can do, running, cycling etc. then you have to be considered in high regard. Darts is a more specialised sport which not everyone has done/played and therefore is easier to win.

To compare someone like Usain Bolt or Chris Hoy to Phil Taylor is absurd. They have reached the top of their field in a sport that everyone has done. I ran at school and rode a bike, but i never played darts.

Bollox - most people have played dartsat some point and if you had natural ability it would be clear. Not very many people at all have cycled round one of those tracks on those very specialised bikes!?!?!?!?!

There will not be anyone on the planet who's better than Taylor - that's a fact mate - you've got that so wrong. The skill in darts is amazing...

Because with the exception of rowing and cycling the rest are pointless

And where the hell does your logic actually come from?! So rowing a boat isn't pointless? Surely in that case all sports are pointless?!:dunce:

Clearly the term and the idea of sports person has gone down hill a lot in recent years.

Rowers are super fit Athletes darts players are not.

Plus the above sports Brett mention are not really world wide are they?

Firstly it can never be seen as being a 'fact', unless of course you are Rafa Benitez. Now i appreciate that Phil Taylor has a high level of skill and is the best Dart player ever but if you read back through my post i said that i ran AT SCHOOL but never played darts. School is where you hone in on the sports, activities & hobbies that interest you and that you are good at. My school never had a Rugby team so i never played rugby. But i can still appreciate the skill that professional rugby players have.

All i was saying is that i don't think you can compare Phil Taylor in a sporting sense to Usain Bolt. And if you think i said otherwise, i really think you should re-read posts before posting replies.

The skill in painting is amazing, however you dont class painters as sports people do you?

Soz didn't have time to read whole thread. I'm not saying that darts players are 'athletes' cos they aren't. But there are many other 'sports'that involve a lot less skill than darts. Darts has every right to be called a sport if Snooker / Pool are... Either way it's a game/sport and it's very highly skilled - What Phil Taylor did last night / has done for years is unbeliveable...

No worries, i agree and like to watch darts. I'm just in the inbetween camp on whether it is a sport or not. I know that they are highly skilled and do train for hours everyday to perfect it, but then when Sports Personality comes round everyear and my Brother goes banging on how Phil Taylor should win it that's when i think that it's not a sport if he can be classed as an athlete/sportsperson!

I do agree about a dart player winning sports personality, but Taylor is an exception and his time has come to win it.

For my two pence worth, I do not believe any sports person should be knighted for their achievements alone.

David Beckham has been an ambassador for England 2018 w/c, set up football training schemes for youth in UK/USA/Brazil, is an Ambassador for UNICEF as well as others, yet he has not been knighted - surely a more worthy recepicant

To just 'Throw a dart' or 'Go cycling round a track' imo should not be criteria to be knighted

I agree, at the very least no sports person should be knighted until they retire. It is a little absurd to go dishing out honours as soon as anyone wins something.

Chris Hoy is a hero of mine but it makes me cringe every time they say Sir Chris Hoy in commentary.

Darts people are quite fat and not very athletic but they do have a steady hand.

Forgive me if I don't go a bundle on this game. It doesn't really command my respect, even if Taylor is quite good at it.

Of course Phil Taylor deserves to be knighted. Sheesh, plenty of faceless civil servants get knighted every year for simply 'doing their job'.

Taylor has already done more for the sport of darts than any other man before him, and the staggering thing is his popularity THROUGHOUT the UK. He can be on stage in any town or city and the crowd will be singing his name at the top of their voices.

Generally, any England players who go north of the border get booed but he is cheered, the same in Wales and Dublin.

This week he's done the darting equivalent of a 9.5 second 100 metres, i.e. rewritten the record books. That was about as good a short format Final as you could ever wish to see.
