Don't be silly. There is nothing in common between 'national socialism' and 'socialism'. You clearly haven't read 1984.

In the interest of fairness (I don't just kick right wing loonies) the greatest misnomer in politics is the Socialist Worker Party, in that they are neither socialists nor, in the main, workers. And it was a shit, shit party (mostly beardy dull men, and rubbish music).

To ignore how this started is to ignore history and yes it was originally a socialist workers party manipulated to the same agenda as what we see today as a far right party. If you deny this happened then we learn nothing from the past.

I've been watching reruns of The World at War on the Yesterday channel, and am fascinated by the depth of factual insight presented, with first hand accounts from all sides, though hardly surprising really as it was made in the 70s..

I was curious to give this Mosely interview a go, but he starts with "Jews wanted and got WW2". Those first few minutes were despairingly exactly like reading Twitter comments on anything.

That's fascinating. I was brought up in Worthing (post war) and had absolutely no idea about any of that. And I was only walking around that area yesterday with my brother!

Neither did I until a couple of months ago.

I also learnt that the vicar of Rustington, James Crosland was a member of the British Union of Fascists and they used to hold meetings in the Rustington Vicarage.

He also appeared as a defence witness for Moseley and some other Blackshirts after they were arrested and prosecuted following the riots in Worthing. Mosely and the others were found not guilty.

Reverend Crosland, as head of Rustington Church School, Rev Crosland tried to influence the children into understanding that Adolf Hitler was "trying to do what he could to make Europe a much better place and he should be admired and respected as a wonderful leader". He also arranged for members of the BUF to lecture to the children in their blackshirt uniforms. Some parents decided to send their children to different schools.

Reverend Crosland wrote to Hitler in 1936. The staff of Rustington Church School were asked to sign the letter before it was sent to Germany: "In order that you may be able to fully understand the attitude of the British people towards the proposals put forward by the German Government, we the undersigned take this opportunity as representative of public opinion, to write and express our full approval of the proposals, and also our deep sympathy and understanding for the German people in their sincere effort to bring a lasting peace to the disturbed and troubled continent of Europe......"

Reverand Crosland had a bit of a chequered past and was prosecuted in 1910 for fraudulently converting to his own use money from the church sick and poor fund. However the magistrates dismissed the case.

My point was that Nazis are not socialists. Their idology was not born of socialism. Taking things from Jews, and eventually killing them because they are not real human beings but parasites is not socialism.

Now, I am sure that Nazis and socialists do indeed have a lot in common - neither believe in cannibalism, and both oppose cruelty to children. Both believe in empowering the working class (socialism! er, not really). But it is what sets them apart that defines them.

It is an easy step from defining Nazis as socialists to defining socialists as Nazis.That is wrong, hence my socialist workers party analogy. I'll give you another. The people's republic of China. The one thing this isn't is the property of the people.

And my allusion to 1984 was because Orwell understood the power of the perversion of language. Ministry of love etc.

But we need to learn from the past and never forget. Born in the 50’s, I was very much aware of the horrors of the war and how it started. Youngsters of today, what do they think of it? Is it all too far back?

The “It could never happen here” comments scare me as much as the fact that the video has been shared here.

We have a number of high profile individuals in this country who exhibit the traits of Mr Mosley.
And vIews are becoming more extreme on both sides. Combined with a general shrug of the shoulders from a third of our population who appear disenfranchised.
