Britain’s richest man has taken over cycling’s Team Sky, Sir Ben Ainslie’s America’s Cup challenge and Eliud Kipchoge’s run at history...

...What connects cycling’s Team Sky, the UK entry for sailing’s 2021 America’s Cup and Swiss second-tier soccer club FC Lausanne Sport? The short answer is that they are all now being funded by petrochemicals magnate Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Beyond that, you would have to ask him.

The Ineos owner’s personal wealth surged a little over UK£15 billion (US$19.5 billion) to UK£21 billion (US$27.3 billion) a year ago, according to the Sunday Times, making him Britain’s richest man.

This in turn will pave the way for Sir Dave Brailsford to step back from cycling and into the seriously comfy slippers of 'Team Ineos - Head of Sport'.

It seems odd that the Hampshite living Ratcliffe hasn't 'done a Bloom' with either Southampton or t'other lot.

A couple of years ago I saw his 'boat' Hampshire II parked up in Southampton marina, somewhat impressive to say the least.

Because he is very good at purchasing under valued assets and turning them around, he will have seen more potential / value in France than UK

Pity he didn't choose Bolton or even Bury.
He's a Manchester Utd supporting Lancastrian born about 15 miles from both B's, the 'wrong side' of the M60.

If only he was born in Farnworth instead of Failsworth!

Born in Failsworth, Lancashire, the son of a father who was a joiner and a mother who was an accounts office worker, Ratcliffe lived there in a council house until the age of ten. His father eventually ran a factory making laboratory furniture. Aged ten, he moved with his family to East Yorkshire, and Ratcliffe attended Beverley Grammar School and lived in Hull up to the age of 18.
