The famous photo of Hillary with the Union Jack flag at the top of Mount Everest was in fact sherpa Tensing Norgay as Hillary revealed that it was a team effort to get to the top of the plateau and sherpa Tensing didn't know how to use the camera. The news at the time was that the British Expedition had conquered Everest but not many people realised that the only definate proof was of a Nepali citizen pictured at the top of the world.

RIP to a true legend. Its a shame that we will probably never know weather he was defenetly the first person to conquer everest. Alot of people believe in the George Mallory theory.

Didnt Hillary have this thing where he wouldnt say who reached the top while Tenzing was still alive. It was only after he died that mr Hillarry admited that he (not the sherper) reached the top first.

Not just a great mountaineer. He done charity work in Nepal.

LEGEND.

Yes. Mallory possibly was the first because when they found his body in the 90s his watch was missing. However, getting to the top is not the skill, but getting back down alive is. If you want a good read on just what a conveyor belt Everest became and how much money was at stake read "Into Thin Air".

Trouble was, after reaching the top life was always going to be downhill from there.
