Of course It is disrespectful to take something that is sacred to many people and mock it or treat it as profane.
I'm not personally offended by it, but there's something sad about doing that. For the person who does it and for those who applaud it.
The statue of Christ the redeemer represents something very deep. It might not mean much to you, but that doesn't mean you have to trivialise it. But maybe that's the way people are. It's a reflection of society. How shallow and inane our society has become.

If someone sees fit to post an image like that, then they might get some blow-back, albeit mild. I have as much right to point that out as he does to post it in the first place.

I'm not upset or triggered. I'm just a bit bemused as to how a post on a thread on a football forum suddenly turns into a conversation about an international/cultural/religious incident. And I'm one of the most 'woke' people I know...

If it was posted on general social media – or was subject of mainstream advertising – I'd completely understand, but this is a largely closed shop where the predominant subject matter is football, as opposed to religion.

It's not exactly an original concept, either. But back then, the main motivation from the Brazilian Catholic church seemed to be more about how much money they could squeeze out of an Italian broadcaster, rather than actually righting a cultural wrong. Priorities, eh?

It's disrespectful in a general sense. That's how it struck me so I posted it, without reflecting on precisely the degree to which it is so. Weighing it up, I concluded the level of disrespect was low, and probably not intended to be offensive, so I described it as "a bit". Like you say, it's a big topic, probably not best suited to a thread about a football club's choice of strip. I guess that's what can happen on online forums.

I have christian beliefs, but find the picture a bit amusing and light-hearted. I do not think it is genuinely making out that Norman Cook is Christ, nor is it saying that he is the saviour of mankind. However, for his part, without the money he ploughed into the club in the dark days we'd have surely gone under, it was a redemption of sorts for BHA and our supporters. The bible actually encourages believers to become more christlike so surely a person becoming more christlike in that they are kind, generous and thinking of others is no bad thing?

I kind of agree with your sentiment, but I would disagree that a particular religion whose followers seek out offence and then exact terrible 'revenge' is shown respect necessarily. Maybe fear? I think the respect is a falsity as most people, like with other religions, wouldn't give it the time of day.

Other than how "scary" they are, the more immediately relevant difference between the most common forms of Islam, and most western forms of Christianity, is that depictions of Christ aren't normally considered intrinsically sacred.

No, you've misunderstood, which is perhaps understandable. I'm not offended on anyone's behalf. I am a Christian, but it goes beyond that.
I just don't like it. It's not that I feel offended, because that would be the wrong word, but there's something I don't like about it. I feel that it is treating as trivial something of great importance. It's a symptom of society, that everything has to be banter all the time, there is no depth, and everything is meaningless and to be mocked. The priorities of society I find strange. One of my son's friends, 17, was stabbed to death recently. There's a lot I could say about this, but I don't think it would be appreciated. Maybe I shouldn't have said anything. But I did and now look at us!
Anyway, I quite like the current kit.
