Rodger forced to quit
by Andy Naylor

The final whistle has blown on Simon Rodger's Albion career after the Shoreham-born midfielder lost a year-long battle to recover from a serious knee injury.

Rodger, 33 last week, is hanging up his boots following talks with manager Mark McGhee.

McGhee revealed today: "Simon has made it official that he is retiring. I had a chat with him and he is just finding it too difficult. The knee has beaten him.

"It is so stiff and it takes him so long to get it going, then he is finding the rest of his body is aching.

"He is just not getting himself fit enough, because he is having to look after the knee."

Rodger ruptured anterior cruciate ligaments in his left knee in a Carling Cup tie at Middlesbrough 13 months ago.

The former Crystal Palace stalwart fought his way back to feature in a friendly at Leyton Orient last month, but he has now been forced to concede defeat to the injury.

"I wasn't that happy with it a while back," Rodger said. "It has never really got better.

"I've been taking anti-inflammatory pills just to get through training and then, once I got back home and got out of the car, I felt like a cripple.

"I couldn't fully lock out my leg and because of that I was getting injuries in other areas, like my calf and back.

"I came to terms with the situation a couple of weeks ago. I've given it my best shot, but in the end I wasn't going to beat it."

It is the second retirement blow to hit Albion in quick succession after defender Dean Blackwell, 34, quit last month with a similar injury.

"It's a shocker for them," McGhee said. "They are two players proven at a higher level and we could have done with them both."

Rodger played 276 League games in 13 seasons with Palace before Steve Coppell signed him for the Seagulls on a free transfer in October 2002.

The left-footed playmaker made the last of his 36 League appearances for the club against Sheffield Wednesday at Withdean, four days before the ill-fated trip to Middlesbrough.

This was when he was a class player. Going to Albion was a major step in the wrong direction for Jolly.
Come back home Simon you will be more than welcome back to Selhurst as a training coach or something.

Now CB I am a little peeved by that comment. Surely what should be arranged is friendly as a testimonial for the chap.

Brighton vs Phalace at yours whaddya think?

All the best to Simon Roger for the future.

Can we afford Nicolas' wages now? It does seem a bit of a coincedence?

I think a tribute match for him would be a great idea but i think it should be against bigger opponents like Bognor regis where he started out.

How disrespectful to Bognor mind you they could give you a chance a put out their reserves.

As sad as it is for Jolly to have to retire, I'm not convinced he's the major influence everyone's making out. Yes he did okay when we got relegated, but he was pretty ineffective last season and, even if fully fit, I don't think he'd have got into the current side.

That said, all the very best, Simon. Thank you for your service. :)

It's a great shame. At least he got a chance to end his career with the team he supports. It must have made his friends and family proud of him at last.

Good luck for the future Jolly! :drink:

Talking about 'bitter' I am having a beer with my Pikey/Chav/Scummer mate who supports Phalarse and I shall mention your name to him. He sits in Sainsburys end just to the right of the goal and near the tinned food section.

Do you know him..he wears a burberry cap..has an earing and a Phalarse tattoo? Not too many of those at Selhurst Park eh eh!

We shall talk of old hostilities....aaah great days.

Croydon my old mucker, splendid retort. I am not a season ticket holder but when I go I usually sit behind the water jump.

Where do you sit at Selhurst? With the Dirty Thirty or the Filthy Forty - maybe the Fairly Clean Sixteen?

I would mention where we are drinking on Friday but fear that Paulie and his crew will give us a severe hiding. He is from New Addington remember.
