Great saying my Grandad used to use and it just stuck with me.

Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth

Ah, I know this one.

To assess the age and general health of a horse the first and most telling signs are to be found with it's teeth.
So, if someone is GIVING you a horse [gift = free] then it is inappropriate to inspect its mouth to see how old / healthy it is - it's a gift, so would be kinda rude to do so.
