No laughing from me. As someone who was in a CCF for 2 years at school, silences should be respected. And identify the person if needs be.

Yes, I’m just making the point that if you do something as callous and brazen as disrupt a minute’s silence for millions of dead who died for this country, and can’t just be quiet for one minute without making the situation all about yourself, a slap is very, very possible and probably deserved.

I wouldn’t dirty my hands with such business myself, but shouting “Free Gaza” during a minute’s silence in a moment of national solidarity is basically incitement to violence.

(All that aside, this sums up for me the mentality of certain sorts on the so-called left who spent most of the last year attacking Starmer for not swiftly demanding a cessation of the Israeli incursion into Gaza, and then spent the general election campaigning against Labour, with no regard whatsoever for the consequences - which includes 5 seats for Farage and his scum pals. Shouting during the last post to antagonize fellow Albion supporters is on a par with attacking the party most likely to enact most of their heart's desires. f***ing stupid. Of course the shouter could be just a run of the mill right wing Jew-hater, so one should probably not jump to conclusions. But shouting anything during the last post is all the same to me - discourteous, ignorant and offensive)

And how you and I might handle the offense caused is very different to one or more of the other 30,000 in attendance, is all I’m saying. I’ve never been punched in the face over such an incident, but I can see how/why it might happen and would have little sympathy if it did.

I can be as high and mighty as I like, but who knows what I might do myself on the spur of the moment, to be fair.

Luckily my dampening circuits work more swiftly than the 400 milliseconds needed to swing a reflex slap. Could be age.

If you were at Selhurst yesterday, you'd have been treated to the sound of pumping music being blasted out from the concourse of the away end during the minutes silence.

I mean, I didn't even know they did that on the away concourse during pre-match. Seems a bit weird. In fairness, the Palace fans online have rightly called it out for the absolute disgrace that it was.

Sadly it’s age old. I remember once we played Wimbledon at Selhurst and in a minutes silences for the two young girls of Soham, someone shouted out ‘ang the bastard!
Indeed that may have been the general feeling but why people need to make a name for themselves at this time is puzzling.

I agree that it is completely inappropriate for anyone to use memorial public silences to make any kind of political points but how in them doing so is this inciting violence? Isn’t violence something they were protesting against?

Do you mean inciting violence generally or in the football stadium?

On another side issue:

Maybe it’s not ideal to have silences in stadiums to remember the dead as was discussed in another thread recently- if you have a gap in the noise of public life, particularly at a football stadiuM, someone will exploit the silence, it’s Murphy’s law.

Also - Despite the popularity of Remembrance Day across the Commonwealth and as much as people really respect the armed forces that serve, it has come under some criticism in recent years for not remembering the many thousands of innocent civilians that have also died in military conflicts since WW1. That’s something that perhaps also should be remembered as part of our Remembrance Day commemorations?

I have family who gave their lives in The Great War. Young lads, who I believe didn't really have a lot of choice in the matter. Often think about them, not just on Remembrance Day. They were to a large degree innocents. Civilians. Not in the same way to what you refer, but still pawns in 'the game'.

I have a lot of emotional buy in to Remembrance Sunday and my kin, but your point is a poignant one and makes me think ..
