Never been one to notice the actual attendances.
I was a regular at the Goldstone fom when Cloughie took over, so if we have had a 30k plus crowd since then, then yes I have.

Yes i can say "I was there" during the seventies......those days were exciting as well !
Been to all since Chelsea.
Rochdale was by far the most crushed with thousands locked out. Derby was the second.
Chelsea was not so crowded and I was titchy back then. Reading was the most surprising. Holiday boost. Southampton was quite full as well.

One that springs to mind is the 31,423 v Darlington (3-1) 26/4/65.We finished top,and I believe that was the ACTUAL attendance rather than the number of tickets sold.

Am I right in thinking that the Safety At Sports Grounds Act pushed the Goldstone's capacity down to 28,000-odd by the time we were in Div 1?

No, you're wrong. But you're not alone, loads of people seem to think that our capacity was reduced to 28,000 when we reached the 1st div.
For the record in that first season our capacity was 33,500 (the same as the attendance for the sell-out Derby League Cup game in 1976). It was never close to being reached, the highest crowd being 29,682 for the visit of Liverpool. Then at the end of the first season the South Stand (which had been partly a terrace) burned down and was re-built as an all-seater. Due to the rebuilding (and due to the North Stand roof being condemned!) the capacity at the start of the next season was only 24,000, but was increased as the season progressed.

Interesting - good to know. Unfortunately by the early 80s - at about the nadir of the game, in retrospect - we were one of several top flight clubs who couldn't guarantee getting over 10,000 a game. Try telling that to the kids.
Attendance is ticket sales.... Not people through the gates, is that right? Where I was sitting ESU, I counted at least 20 empty seats, shame as I thought it was a sell out and would of been nice for all seats to have bums on them being it was the official last game of the championship.

Yes. 1979 I think was the last one. I was there but can't remember who we played! Edit: just spotted the previous post! I attended all those games! Blackpool and Charlton in '78 being the most memorable...

It wasn't that unusual in the old days !! I was at the ground breaking Boxing day match v Fulham in 1958 when over 36,000 crammed in.
Most went to see Johnny Haynes, probably the most gifted player of his time, but he was marked out of the match by Jack Bertolini.
Great days on that huge open terrace on the east side. Some days I'd get there by 1.00 for a 3.00 KO so I could get a crash barrier to sit on.
Nothing like a big crowd to set an atmosphere. Long may our attendances keep on rising. You could take in boxes to stand on if you were a kid, otherwise you'd get passed over everyone's head to the front. No segregation then either, you could stand where you like and frequently found yourself with opposition supporters. Always good banter and great fun. Trouble was very rare and normally caused by Chelsea or Millwall fans.
