Went self employed in 2007, kicked it in the head last year. Hence I have 17 years of documents to get rid of. Most are directly work based with confidential information on them. Clearly this will take me months to get rid of this on my poor little office shredder, but if any of the great and good on NSC can point me towards a reputable shredding firm it would be appreciated.

Cheers

I used Homeshred a year or two back for around 10 sacks. Worked quite well, collection isn't that regular but they came on the date and time I booked.

I use Shred on site - https://www.shredonsite.co.uk/
Book a site visit, usually a Thursday in the BN area, they turn up with a truck and shred in front of you, reasonable cost too

£55 plus vat for a recycling bin size bin. They collect the paper from you for that, no pissing about with bags, just load it it the bin. They will even take it in the box files or cardboard files if you have been filing in them. They send you official confirmation of shredding.

I sympathise with you. We're clearing out my father-in-law's house - and he has rooms full of stuff that he should never have brought home from work. And all his bank statements and receipts since about 1963....

I looked into shredding companies - they all looked okay. I especially liked the ones that do it in front of you.

In the end though - I took it all to work, as we have a confidential waste contract. I paid the cost of £7.50 for a big white bag. The second time I did it, the bags had of course got smaller for the same price....

I hear the Watergate hotel has a rather handy shredding department. US government approved.

So it wasn’t just my late father then?!!

OMG, I feel for you. Last year I burned all of it, but not before painstakingly taking hundreds of documents out of their separate plastic sleeves. Bank statement after bank statement, all the way back to 1970 plus salary sleeps, every health claim, insurance… Honestly, it was both retro and ridiculous. Took days to clear my Dads paperwork. I did uncover the odd piece of family history however tucked in amongst in error so was glad I didn’t just put in a big pile and torch immediately.

I’ve used Britannia Beckwith in Newhaven - easy to use (for me) and reasonable cost. You just fill up their sacks and drop them off.

Oh yes - sounds very familiar.

He also collected bits out of old newspapers, and almost every letter he ever received - which he would neatly date, and put back in the bloody envelope. So, we had to take everything out of every envelope to check what it was. And like you - it wasn't just in neat stacks. He'd have a huge pile of rubbish cuttings from newspapers, and in the middle of it would be his birth certificate and some shares....

But at least I did find a few interesting bits - like a hotel booking card from Newcastle, that had been signed by Tommy Cooper who was performing there that week. Got £15 on ebay for that!

We did also keep his first salary slip from 1950. And some of the hand-written bank statements, because I had no idea they were like that. And the one from 1970 explaining that this was the last statement he'd be receiving in L.S.D., and that the next one would be decimalised.

18 white sacks in then end I think it was. Plus about the same amount of recycling bins filled up, plus some went in the skip....

It's certainly given me the impetus to empty some of the 'come-in-handy' stuff from my loft.
