VAR was always doomed to fail. Its attempting to make binary decisions in a game of chaos.

Unless its an absolute shocker of a decision by the on-field ref then VAR should never even get involved. But inevitably, since it was brought in, its started at the thin end of a very thick wedge. Mission creep kicked in, and now it is almost universally hated by everyone. The enormous multiple downsides that we now have to routinely endure just for it to correct the odd decision is simply too great.

A lot of people saw this coming, but were dismissed as luddites.

They didn't appeal because none of them thought it was a penalty. Nor did I.

Its actually getting progressively worse, not better. The duff VAR calls are stacking up week in, week out. At times I am left literally AGOG at the VAR decisions. Did anyone see the Matt Targett tackle on Pereira the other week in the Villa v Newcastle game ? One of the most shocking knee-high leg-breaking tackles you could ever see, a stone wall immediate red. The ref books him. I'm thinking "VAR will upgrade that to a red, it simply HAS to....." But - nope. Astonishing.

I'm sorry, but VAR is now just a pointless mess. It costs FAR more aggravation than it ever solves, and when I come to power I will be binning it off immediately.

That is horrific, yes, they either implement the laws or bin the whole mess. imho.

My favourite part of all this drama is that 5 live said they had spoke to the VAR room and they said they didn't see enough to overturn it, BUT if the pen had been given by the ref, they wouldn't have overturned that either. It reminds me of the police force, refs protecting refs from terrible decisions.

That was about as easy a decision to make on the evidence presented.
Clear and obvious error = yes
Player was clearly kicked should’ve been overturned

The var refs being miles away was supposed to prevent emotional decisions being made but clearly he went with hmm this is a rivalry game best stick to the status quo here

How is that Targett foul not seen straight away? I get that a ref might find himself unsighted for a particular moment fair enough, but what is the lino's role in this? What are they doing?

Standards need to be raised and public accountability is the only way I can see to do this. That means match reports (with key decisions explained) published. It means referees being ranked and going up and down the divisions according to these rankings.

Lino's need to be at the standard of refs, (as you see in rugby) and they and the 4th official need to help the refs much more than they do. VAR wouldn't be needed if the referring teams were were competent. I'm not saying it's an easy job. I ran the line for while and it's bloody hard. I just think they are making it look harder than it actually is

That's kind of like umpires call in cricket. I don't necessarily disagree with it, if we have to have VAR, the clear and obvious rule has to stay in place. (except they got this wrong, it was clear and obvious)

We will all say it was a pen, but most Nigels would say otherwise. It certainly isn't blatant as he is on the way down when their clumsy clogger clips him, so I think it is right that VAR doesn't overturn the decision and that the ref takes responsibility for it.

Personally I think it just shows up Atkinson for being an average ref. I'd have given it, but can see why he didn't as it wasn't a blatant mistake. So VAR did it's job, but the ref didn't.
