Yes.

I am still highly sceptical of the way this is being reported and have lost all confidence in the press to give a truly balanced view of what is actually going on. Especially given the time of year.

However, if everything I read is to be believed then I simply cannot see the logic in allowing any sport to continue to be played. How can any differentiation be made between 22 men in close proximity kicking a ball around and any other job? It just highlights the utter lack of consistency in what we are being told and what is actually happening in the world of work across the country.

I was on holiday in Wales when their full lockdown was announced and had to listen to Drakeford give a faux Churchilian speech on the radio about shutting all non-essential shops to save lives, only way etc etc. OK, but two days later the Scottish rugby team flew down from Edinburgh to Cardiff to play a game of rugby! And this was when Drakeford was urging Wales to close its borders.

If we do this, we do it properly, or there's no point. Alternatively, if it can be justified, please tell us why.

'Should it' or 'will it'?

I think it will, and should.

This new variant is clearly running rife and we have to expect footballers to transmit it within their club bubbles.

I've heard some say that players should be told that they can't mix with families. That's morally and legally reprehensible so not going to happen. Also, there's an argument that football as an entertainment industry should not be allowed to keep operating in higher tier restrictions if the performing arts can't or is not allowed.

On the one hand, keeping football going through this upcoming lockdown will take the edge off the boredom. On the other I have to acknowledge that football doesn't exist in a vacuum and case rates are getting out of control.

So what to do then?

A 2 month break to me seems appropriate. This would mean that there's no chance of finishing the season before the euros.

This will lead to a massive clash between UEFA, who want to protect their cash cow and the national leagues, especially ours, who want to protect their cash cow.

I think there will be a compromise. A horrible one. It will be along the lines of play this season up until the start of May. Then stop for the Euros, then finish the current season in September and October. Start a new season in December. Finish that next November for the world cup, then spend the next couple of years after that edging the start and finish dates back to normality.

That's happened with other sports. In cricket they've been living like that for months on end to get games on

If we carry in through next weekend will be absolute carnage as FL clubs will be required to all take covid tests for the 3rd round fixtures, this is going to produce an awful lot of positives, many games being called off and a backlog that may mean clubs having to play 4 games a week in the back end of the season.

This is unacceptable, we need to get back to the March mantra, stay at home, protect the NHS, save lives. This means football and all elite sports and entertainments should be immediately suspended indefinitely.

Doesn't stop it being morally and legally reprehensible.

And in cricket, nobody was forced to do this.

That takes the "legally reprehensible" out of it

"Morally reprehensible?" Up to you if that's what you think, personally having our clubs owned by various murderous, despotic middle eastern regimes is worse.

Morally reprehensible to deny people the right to see their families
Legally reprehensible in setting a precedent that can be used against the club by a player to seek damages and thus put the club at risk.

Either way, it just feels wrong doesn't it? Just a question.

Well it does, but we're faced with a rather unappealing set of options

Did they ever vote in the end on how many games need to be played this season before the season can't be voided ?

If so, was it 1/2 the games, 2/3rds or no decision?

It seems crazy that Rotherham felt they had no choice but to play last night, despite the squad being decimated by Covid over the past two weeks. Most of their team had only trained a couple of days since mid-December, and they couldn't name a full subs bench. Needless to say, they lost.

Looking at it purely from a disease control point of view it's a no-brainer - suspend now.

And from a football viewpoint, given we face a tough run of games it is in our interest to suspend the season, have a bumper Jan window, and come back in February with half a new side.

Only just got back into the game and now wants to stop it. He really only wants a period of time with his players before they attempt to get up the league. Saying he doesn't want covid at his age, he didn't have to take the job.
