Some years ago my wifes father couldnt fill in the form to renew his licence as he couldnt see it clesr enough but continued to drive from near The Henty in Ferring to the seafront. He said if he didng he would never go out and saw nothing wrong with it.

There are no rules to have a medical 8r eyesight check you just fill tge form in anc are trusted to declare any short comings.

Can you see the keyboard?

Walking past Co op garage in Frankkynn Rd Haywards Heath when an elderly gehtleman wanted to turn right and head towards the hospital and asked me if the road was clear as he couldnt see far enough up the road.

Hold on, the elderly gentleman wasn't you talking to yourself was it? Reminds me of one of those Police Camera TV programs - woman called up and said "There's a drunk person driving the wrong way down the road. It's me!"

The Department for Transport (DfT) says there is no evidence older drivers are more likely to cause an accident, and it has no plans to restrict licensing or mandate extra training on the basis of age.

That was in September 2013
How much has traffic increased since then?

When in my pub a couple of customer sold up and left to join their son in Spain but returned within 9 months as he was 80 and thus too old for a resident to drive in Spain, so he told me. He did say that if he went to Spain as a visitor and returned to Uk every 3 months even for 24 hours he could drive there as a visitor. Not sure if that is true but that is why they said they returned to UK.

If Ben's Grandad had his way I would have to give up driving in 6 weeks, when I reach my 80th. Fortunately, for me and some disabled neighbours who rely on me to take them shopping, he doesn't make the rules and heaven help us if he ever becomes that powerful. Sieg heil BG - not

I know a 96 year old ex Navy Commander who is still living in his own home, living a completely 'normal' life including driving everywhere. Age is just a number.

Perhaps you are a person who would pass a driving ability and vision test if it was brought in, many others wouldnt and it is those that we should be legislating against.

The Dept of Transport & the RAC are not worried about 4 million drivers so why should you be? Don't judge others on your own capability.

No upper age limit but mandatory retesting at certain ages/intervals. I wouldn't make people pass the full test though, I'd make it more of a check that there's no reason to stop them driving.

It's academic though, as old people vote and any party that advocated retesting would be seen as an enemy of the pensioners and would lose the election.

That is why it has never been done as with filling the black hole in tax simple do away with money and make all payments wages and purchases by card only. There would be no cash jobs but it would be an Election loser

Wish they'd tell that to the insurance companies then - and make it compulsory for them to take notice of it. Older drivers are simply regarded as free cash bonuses by the insurance companies.
If older drivers are to be subjected to more and more tests - which will presumably cost plenty - then the results should be reflected in lower insurance premiums. If a driver is tested as fit to drive by the authorities, then there is no excuse for the insurance companies charging an 80 year old three times as much (or more) than a 50 year old.

BG I'd ban you from NSC now - you bring absolutely nothing to any debate about anything.
My Mum & Dad are in their early eighties and unlike you are in complete control of their faculties.
They drive all over Sussex enjoying the last few years of their life together.
You on the other hand lost your marbles years ago.
A few posters on NSC now and again agree with your ramblings so you are allowed to continue with your tosh.

How do I become a Mod :moo:

I can put up with all the palarse trolls that frequent NSC but you are a disgrace.

Your mum and dad are fortunate that they still have all their faculties about them but many older people dont. Perhaps the answer is not a total ban but a retest on the renewal of the licence to ensure that they are still capable both for driving and eyesight etc. I do still drive when needed but prefer not to.

If case 1 couldn't see up the road he should have informed the DVLA anyway and is committing an offence as it is.

More generally, there must be a case for an eye test at a certain age, but no upper age driving limit as such.

That is true but I wonder how many would be that truthful if it affected them.?
