Over there
After the horrific killings in Manchester, there's lots of talk in the media again as to wether the police should carry firearms. I say no, as it would totally change the unique way the British police operate, buts that's easy for me to say as I don't face the dangers these people face day to day. And I understand many surveys of the force say they are overwhelmingly against being armed.
But what do you guys think?

Absolutely not.

But at the same time, for certain crimes, in the day of DNA et all, the death penalty should be in place. If anyone is proved to knowingly falsified evidence to wrongly convict someone to death, than that should be treated as murder and carry the death sentence.

No and No, civilised societies don't murder their own citizens and the Police don't need guns for the average copper.

I think they should be armed, but I do see the argument for them not being.

I do also think the death penalty should still be in force, all that said I do come from the "chop their hands off for stealing pick n mix" camp!!! Tazer guns should be used on people who park on yellow lines, and quite seriously anyone caught spitting chewing gum onto a street footpath should be publicly flogged in the town centre!!!

Hey Joe, what are you doing ...

I would NOT let an armed PC in my home, and that includes tasers. I would not an armed anyone in. The weapon might go off and damage the decor.

Armed response units do a great job and usually protect the public. And as horrific these murders were, they are thankfully rare for murders of members of the force. We've all seen the police camera stuff on t.v and footage of nutters grabbing at officers utility belts. I just worry that with a firearm on the belt would add extra temptation and additional loss of life.

Armed police works so well in America, I mean there's practically no gun crime whatsoever over there. Its a UTOPIA.

Yup. Lets arm police here and fight fire with fire. Brilliant. Oh and while we're at it, lets have the death penalty too, because someone who's facing the chair or lethal injection if they're caught will obviously not resort to increasingly desperate means to escape capture.

Its all so obvious.

America is in its own special bubble.....but our police in Canada are armed and we have few issues with it. No reason it cant work and I have always been surprised by the British lack of armed police really. Not going to pretend I understand all the dynamics of how the British law enforcment work but perhaps they should be armed?
