Abort, retry, fail
That says that Sussex was split in 1889?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Sussex

West Sussex is a county in the south of England, bordering East Sussex (with Brighton and Hove), Hampshire and Surrey. With its origins in the kingdom of Sussex, the later county of Sussex was traditionally divided into six units known as rapes. By the 16th century, the three western rapes were grouped together informally, having their own separate Quarter Sessions; they were administered by a separate county council from 1888. In 1974, West Sussex was made a single ceremonial county with the coming into force of the Local Government Act 1972. At the same time a large part of the eastern rape of Lewes (the Mid Sussex district which includes the towns of Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill and East Grinstead) was transferred into West Sussex.

I like mocking West Sussex types so no, let's keep the divide.

I live in East Grinstead which is further east than Brighton yet I'm in West Sussex...

If you don't want to create a united Sussex can't East Sussex adopt us? I think the A23/M23 makes a better county boundary, so East Grinstead, Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill all join East Sussex and West Sussex get to keep Crawley.

Haywards Heath was in East Sussex as I played for the County Basketball team in the late sixties I think it was moved in the early seventies to West Sussex!

Never.

The last time Sussex was a single administrative entity was in 825, when the South Saxons finally gave up and submitted to Ecgberht, King of Wessex.

I thought it was something like that, but others were confident with dates which made me doubt.

Was it a mistake to split and should we change are county boundaries? :moo:

I think are county boundaries are OK - been East and West for administrative purposes as long as I can remember. Just so so long as we preserve are identity and are independent spirit, and particularly are unique useage of English grammar.

Administratively, surely cheaper to have one county council. Thought that was the way of the world nowadays.
I never actually think of it as East, or West Sussex. Just Sussex really.
