This season his confidence is low, his distribution poor. World class forwards will sniff weakness and exploit it shamelessly.

If we want to win the World Cup we cannot be taking unnecessary risks by playing him. We are already taking necessary risks by taking Crouch and (probably) Darren Bent.

So who goes instead, assuming King isn't fit. Wes Brown :jester:

Ferdinand
Terry
King
Carragher
Woodgate

Should all be above Campbell in the pecking order, and should all go if fit. Michael Dawson is also a better bet, though unlikely to be picked. I don't know where you get Wes Brown from.

I don't know where you get Woodgate from. Class act he may be, but the guy can't even get up without picking up an injury.

There is only a debate because we already have Terry, Carragher, Ferdinand and King. If we didn't have so many I think Campbell would get a bit more consideration. Arsenal now have four games to play and there is every chance he will play in all of them so let's see how things look after the final. Lest we forget this guy has delivered in every tournament he has gone to.

BTW my first choice pairing would be Carragher & Terry.

Terry
King
Rio
Carra
Woodgate
Dawson
Anton

are all higher up the pecking order imo. Still I'm sure in Sven's world Camp-bell is the man for the job, mind you not necessarily the England CB job if you know what I mean.

So you agree with me then - apart from Woodgate (who is also injured)... with King injured there are no options after Campbell.

Dawson is nowhere near the player Campbell is

Dawson has had a really good season and has improved a hell of a lot. Rio has also had a very good season and I would take both of them over Sol because he is not fit, has hardly played and when he does he spends the whole game watching mens bottoms instead of the football.

He looked slow, was caught out of position several times, and would be skinned alive by any half decent international striker with a bit of pace and skill. He ain't the player he used to be. But i'm 99% sure Sven will take him anyway!

I remember an Albion vs Spurs pre-season friendly at the Goldstone - we had just signed Junior McDougald and Jeff Minton from Spurs. Junior (who was no slow coach) was chasing after the ball and an unknown and very young Sol came out of nowhere, outpaced him and out-muscled him, turned and took the ball away. He was superb in those days. Still good enough if he gets rid of the demons.

May be wrong but I think it was Kurt Nogan, who was a bit of a star for us in those days, that Sol had in his pocket for the whole game. I remember it because I was shocked at how much quicker than Nogan he was. Campbell was also about 5 stone lighter than he is now, I reckon.

I stand corrected Icy - I knew it was someone on our yeam who was quite quick!! McDougald and Minton did play though - I'm sure it was part of the deal to bring them to us

Wasn't it supposed to be Klinsmann's debut as well, I'm sure the Albion sold a shitload of tickets promoting it as his debut. Spurs then turned up without him but we had one hell of a crowd, many of them Spurs fans.

Yeah I think you are right - probably why I went - to go and see the diving......!!!

Like you I remember thinking that the gulf between a good Div 2 striker (Nogan) and an unknown premiership centre half (Campbell) was massive

Falmer, soon...
I think you've got three similar centre backs in

Campbell, Carragher and Terry.

I think Ferdinand is a different type of player and as long as his mind is on the job, I'd have him as the main centre back. He'd have Neville alongside which would help.

Although I think Carra is the better defender, i'd have Terry as first choice for his organistation and the aerial threat at the other end.

Was that the game that finished 3-0?

I was a big Sol fan up until this season, but there's too many question marks hanging over him now. If he does a half time FLOUNCE when the likes of West Ham are running rings around him, whats he gonna do in the pressure of a World Cup ? I know he's performed superbly in the past, but he looks like damaged goods at the moment. I remember Jason Roberts making MINCEmeat out of him in the Wigan 2nd leg at Highbury as well.

Not for me. We've got good cover there.

This is what it is all about for me. In Terry, Ferdinand and Caragher, we have people that are in better fitness and form than Sol, so he definitely shouldnt start.

However, with King and Woodgate injured he would be worth taking in the squad.
