Point is, with the Free Schools programme, MORE faith-based schools will be state-funded in future, along with schools using different education methods.

Well I am not opposed to schools trying different methods but or even specialising, but one imagines faith based schools can get funding from other sources than government more readily.

We need to take a long hard look at the Finnish education model, which concentrates on making all schools good.

Because the school could be local and good. I don't believe in god, but the people running our local C of E are good people, and the school is good. I'd rather they go to that than have to travel further to a school less able to teach my children.

My observation is that when I went to school (I am 39) you basically got allocated one. Today parents (in theory) get a choice.

I don't think kids today generally come out of the school system any better than in my day.

Well if students didn't reach certain Midi-chlorian levels then they couldn't be admitted to Jedi school.

No. The C of E I went to was god awful. The C of E my kids go to is excellent.

And I make no apologies for that. If I send my kids to a CoE school there's every likelihood they will be indoctrinated into the Christian faith.

I went to a CofE primary in Hove.

Being sandblasted daily with unadulterated religion managed to turn me into a lifelong atheist by the age of eight. I truly thank the Lord for that.

Schools shouldn't be linked to a specific religion full stop. It annoys me a lot that my two sons have to have a daily assembly with prayers and hymns. Teach RE by all means - i.e. tell them what each religion is about - but schools are for teaching not brain washing.

Half way down page 1, and nailed. A week into primary school and my daughter has come home singing hymns and telling me I should pray before meals. Absolute disgrace.

And you can bet they descriminate heavily against children who are not bright enough.

Cherrypicking faith schools get good results because they can pick and chose which children they take.

My 2 daughters went to a faith school 1 has dyslexia couldn't ask for a better school
Religion never forced down thier throats and a good understanding of other faiths
An absolutley gem off a school and hopefully will last another 150 years

I think we got this one right. It might not by itself cancel out our system -- or 'system' -- of health care provision, but it helps.
