then you'd get the problem of him not getting back to the touchline in time to see "offsides" as they are known!

I did ponder that but I've always been perplexed as to why the ref always referees play from behind the action - and surely someone in front of the play would be useful?

Am I right in thinking Ice-Hockey has a couple maybe 3 refs? Its been discussed in the past the possiblity of having a ref for either half of the pitch. That may or may not work depending on various scenario's.

Ideally the linesman need to flag for fouls alot more than they do, they always seem to wait for the ref and if he does'nt call it the linesman seem to be too afraid to argue his judgement so keep the flag down, this is wrong IMO they need/must report anything they deem wrong as they all train in to be refs anyway!

yep I think the NBA also has three ref's....

I think you're right - the linesman need to have more authority and more power to stop play for bad deeds!! or they need to get a healthy dose of confidence...

probable something to do with the fact that the crowd in some instances is a few small feet away and the poor old lino cops abuse all game so he figures if he lays low he won't get stuff chucked at him!!!

NO but if they roll about n the floor injured then they should be made to go off the pitch for 5 or 10 mins. They won't do it then :)

This is a good question but referees cannot be expected to send players off for diving. The reaction of our fans behind the goal when Knight got booked for diving at Luton showed the problem. As with most rules it is a great idea in principle but when your player is wrongly dismissed it can lose you a game. Can you imagine a referee sending off a Manchester United player in front of the Stretford End when they dived in the penalty area?
