Should Man Utd sell Wayne Rooney?

I wonder whether any of the United board have thought this following his anonymous showing in the Champions League final.

He's scored on average 2 in 5 over his career for United - that's OK but not great in that particular side.

He's scored 2 competitive goals for England in the last 4 years, and one of those was against Estonia.

You'd have to think that having won the Champions League and Rijkaard on his way out Lionel Messi might be open to offers, certainly there would appear to be a potential window of opportunity.

There's no reason to suppose Real won't continue to dominate in Spain, and Tevez is already at Utd.

Personally, I don't think anything will happen but I'd prefer Messi in my side.

Didn't want to spill the beans but we are having a whip round at the Tank appreciation meal, and proceeds are going to the 'Buy Messi for the Albion' campaign.

Another NSC exclusive.

I think Man U are probably happy with him , I do think a few years ago everyone would of been predicting a lot more from Rooney than he has currently delivered though. Still only 22 though.

As for Messi or Rooney Q, Messi everyday of the week

They don't really need Messi though, do they? They need a striker.

Berbatov.

Messi is younger than Rooney by one year, his goalscoring exploits are similar.

I'm personally surprised that at 22 with the best part of 5 years behind him Rooney hasn't scored more for Utd. Maybe the fact England are out of Euro 2008 will help, but he looks a little burnt out to me.

I suspect that in terms of a deal Rooney and Messi would be pretty similar in value, maybe Messi another £4 or £5 mill. You'd probably get Berbatov and Ronaldinho for Rooney - maybe Ferguson should get on the phone to Newcastle?!

Statistics don't tell the amount of work he puts in off the ball, or the goals that he's involved in. Over the season Rooney has performed well and usually has a hand in most of Utds attacks. Fergie loves him and that should be enough evidence of his quality.

He's about a lot more than scoring goals though isn't he. He must provide quite a few assists.

Spot on. I thought it was very evident, especially in the first half of the CL final, that the difference between Utd and Chelsea was that Utd played as a team, whereas Chelsea were playing like 11 talented individuals.

I don't particularly like Rooney, but the FACT of the matter is that United's record with him in the side is SIGNIFICANTLY better than without him.

well the 70 odd goal record between the Ronaldo Tevez and Rooney this season sums it up, thats pretty unbelievable. Its a lot of running off the ball he does as well, recently though yeah, you kind of forget hes on the pitch though as said his record on the pitch is superb

United would only try and sign Messi I reckon if Ronaldo did go which is probably a season or 2 away

Rooney has never struck me as an out and out striker, he always looks better playing in the hole behind the two strikers.

I don't have the figures to hand, but if you look at United's record WITHOUT Rooney this season, you get your answer.

Shouldn't this be on a Man Utd forum?

Why don't you set up thread based on something to do with the Albion then?
It's so interesting talking about the club at this present time that I've come up with all the possible topics you could bring up which I'm sure no one has ever mentioned or discussed.

Where will we finish next season?
Do you hate Stewards?
Billionaire looking to takeover?
Currie, do you want him?
Will Elphick stay?
what will be our average attendance next season?
How much will MA spend?

Well, I'm sure Wayne Rooney doesn't need a defence from me on here, but he's going to get one anyway. There's no way he should be sold.

I think you have to look at it slightly differently, ie what do defenders think. And for club or country, they hate playing against him.

He doesn't give them a second's peace, mentally or physically, and is capable of unlocking the door at any moment with a great pass or superb finish.

The three of them - Rooney, Tevez and Ronaldo - play very well together, and they can't be far off attaining Law/Best/Charlton status. And it is Rooney and Tevez who are the more unselfish of the trio.

Plus also, old-fashioned view though it is, I happen to believe that it is some function (not the main purpose, but still a minor duty) of the big clubs in this country to play and showcase the country's best talent, which unquestionably benefits the national team. The likes of Wenger are not helping England at all with their attitude.

Rooney was one of six Englishmen fielded by United at the start of the Champions League final, which was great to see. And in that situation I would like to see United in a marginal call (clearly not if the other guy was miles better), give the edge to the English player.
