In my opinion if they are given a knighthood then they should renounce their current occupation and actually become knights.

Eh? How does that work exactly? Bonkers but brilliant! I like it.

"In tonight's performance of Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark will be played by Joey Essex as Ian McKellen has gone on a crusade to the Holy Lands with Lewis Hamilton and Richard Branson."

You give them the same. Why does it have to be different. Hamilton the best there's ever been in his sport so recognize that and then recognize the team that developed a vaccine. However, do you give everyone in that team of scientists a knighthood? What they've done is great but how much of it is down to research by those that went before them. It wasn't as if we knew nothing about coronviruses before 2020.

I have no problem with Hamilton's knighthood as posted before, but I think we do need to re-evaluate the honours system. Hamilton has been widely decorated and financially rewarded because one he is brilliant but Formula One is a hugely popular sport with worldwide coverage.

However, there are numerous examples of other even sports people who have globally excelled in their sports in the past (against all odds) you would never have heard of. I just happened to meet a number in a previous job and that's what started to make me think about the honours system.

Should the giving of an honour be linked to their "celebrity" or simply on the basis of what they have done? Personally I'd like to see the honours geared more towards highlighting who we never heard about rather than dishing it out to millionaire sports people and actors.

Lastly, I struggle with your belief that the reward given to a Formula One should equate to those who develop vaccines, but each to their own.

not sure if you could have got a bet on LH to double the SPOTY and Knighthood for 2020 ..............in hind sight it was a dead set no brainer i guess.....

does that mean that commentators will have to use the prefix "sir" every time his name is mentioned .....that would be amusing.

an ex employer of mine had parents who were Baron and Baronette , large estates in Cornwall and Norfolk , both estates are leased to agricultural concerns and the rent paid allows them to pay the mortgage on their dairy farms and vineyards in the Margaret River / Bunbury area of W.A .

Life is great for some .

Ah yes,but Bobby Moore would have been great in any kit or footwear.would Hamilton and bottas be great in the worst cars or in the poorest teams on the grid?
I think Hamilton would.
If he had started at a poorer team he would have snapped up pretty quick by a rich one anyway.
He has always been the best driver in the wet by some margin and also I remember a driver years ago(I can't remember which driver) saying that the best drivers are actually hands on with what goes on behind the scenes of the race team and the cars development of which I think Lewis is one of the best examples of this kind of involvement.
Thoroughly deserved Knighthood for Lewis. He came from humble begginings and worked incredibly hard to get to the top.

He always credits his success to his parents who gave up almost everything to support their young son as he rose through the competetive ranks.
He is well aware that he sits at the sharp end, on top of a pyramid of technicians, designers and family and he always remembers that and dedicates eack win and every title to them.

Ultimately, he is THE best driver of a F1 car in the world, his abilities to find an overtaking strategy in a race or get the car round in atrocious weather conditions are head and shoulders above others. Put him in any car on the grid and that car and team will be improved by his being there.

He stands as a role model for what can be achieved by team work and hard work and he's British!

You’d hope that nobody will be along to argue with any of that but this is NSC!

No suprise this was coming though was it.

The question is does he deserve it what has he given to society? Sir Jackie has and keeps giving as he is with his dementia charities currently, but sportspeople, in general, should not get knighthoods.

I am happy for you as it clearly means a lot to you, but sad for how we easily chuck out the knighthoods under pressure from a group of people.

Enjoy your glass of sherry celebrating his Knighthood tonight, I will enjoy my Sparkling English celebrating the departure from the EU to be truly independent again.

Win-win so we can all be happy.

To be honest it's an odd year to be dishing out awards to millionaire sports people and actors.

If you give a knighthood to a Formula 1 driver, I'm not sure what you end up giving the people who have developed vaccines.

Maybe that's for next year and maybe this year is the year the honours system is re-evaluated.

Nobel prizes, which are probably worth more.

What you mean of course is, sticking to EU rules but not having a say, or making ourselves less economically competitive  God bless independence :moo:

I had no intention of bringing Brexit into this at al. I am more than happy to continue this discussion on the designated thread though Mouldy should you wish :)

Anyway, LH getting the knighthood is well deserved

On balance yes because of his outstanding achievements yes to knighthood but in future I feel for anyone else to be considered that already earns millions of pounds in their chosen sport etc they should need to have to do a certain amount of giving back . I’m not sure about Lewis, he talks about BLM but has does he give money to charity and have a foundation that helps less fortunate people . Even people that earn a fraction of what he earns , often do that , does he ? No idea

Secondly I think from now on anyone that chooses to purposely avoid paying tax as a uk citizen by living full time in Monaco etc should be exempt from a knighthood .

This should be made clear from 2021 onwards .

It's funny how Lewis Hamilton's award of a knighthood triggers this response but Sir Philip Green's and Sir James Ratcliffe's didn't ?
