As Severnside Gull says Eid-Ul-Fitr changes each year as does Eid-Ul-Adha therefore so it wouldn’t be a practical idea imo. Furthermore different groups of Muslims(sometimes even different Mosques) can celebrate on either of two successive days according to when the moon was sighted in Saudi, Pakistan or wherever. When I worked in inner-city schools it often happened that you had different staff and students absent on different days. At the schools I worked in we just tried to celebrate everything which seemed a good shout to me!

Having said that it could be open to abuse, as in that someone could very much go down the current gender issues, that someone could claim to be Christian and muslim or any other religion for that matter and thus maximize their religious holidays.

I think he is suggesting that everyone gets the same number of 'Bank Holidays' and adds it to their holiday and takes it when they want regardless of any religion, so everyone gets the same.

And I certainly went through a phase of 'being spiritual' at Summer Festivals albeit many years ago now

Bugger the religious nonsense, allocate bank holidays based on what people actually do.

What happens in America which I personally feel is more inclusive, is that Christmas greetings are often referred to as happy holidays rather than happy Christmas as it coincides often with other religious holidays notably Hanukkah for Jewish people . Perhaps we could follow that example .

When I first arrived in the States I did initially find the 'Happy Holidays' greeting a bit grating but have got used to it now. I agree it is more inclusive and once I lived in New York I realized that Hanukkah is a very big holiday for its large Jewish population with most offices and public places having a Menorah as well as a Christmas tree.

I was also surprised that for a Christian country there is no public holiday for either Good Friday or Easter Monday. A lot of British companies will give staff the Friday or Monday as a holiday as they are used to that in the UK.

Britain is a Christian country , if we had bank hols for Eid , we would be morally obliged to do it for Jewish, Hindu, and all other major religions - this would mean an extra 4 -6 bank hols a year . It’s not going to happen.
