Big Ships:thumbsup:

Heard similar stories about the Dwight D, went on it for a day whilst in training at daedalus (it was anchored off in the solent as it was too big to get into the harbour). We were warned to keep away from the mess decks, also the ships on-board patrol were all armed and it had nothing today with 'repels boarders'.

When the JFK moored in Portsmouth harbour, many moons ago, it got in with inches to spare on either side. When I went to see it in dock, the sun went out it is so tall

And a skimmer as well, as I ended up in Boats in Faslane:thumbsup:

You're all wrong. This beauty - HMS Bellerophon (or Billy Ruffian as she was known by the crew) fought at Trafalgar. The crew were the hardest bastards in the Navy. At one stage they were under attack from three french and two spanish ships and there was so much blood on the decks that sailors found it difficult to stand up. The captain, wounded and on his way out, demanded his crew battle on which they did and managed to take out many frenchies and spaniards before having to withdraw. People talk about HMS Victory but Billy Ruffian was the best.

If you really want to annoy someone from Pompey (even the pacifists) refer to them as boats not ships.

You sure it was the JFK?? She has visited Portsmouth on three occaisions, 1976, 83 and 96, on all occaisions she dropped anchor in Stokes Bay (solent) the last CV to actualy squeeze into the dockyard was USS America in 1974, the last proper carrier to get into the dockyard was the French carrier Clemeceu in 1997.

This is a proper warship, from a proper navy, HMS King George the Fifth, usually known as the KG5

On 27 May 1941, she fired 339 x 14 inch and 660 x 5.25 inch shells at Bismarck. King George's shell fire helped damage Bismarck's Superstructure and disable its main armament. At 10:39 that morning, Bismarck sank.

as I am old and have nothing better to do, I am currently building the Tamiya 1/350 version of the King George V

Indeed, mind you hardly saw any ships because I ended up on a Junglie squadron, spent most of my time in a hole in the ground or in Norway being shouted at by Royal. The boss used to show as a photo of a ship to remind us of what they looked like:laugh:

In basic training I went on a boat for a looksee, When we got off I was so happy that I decided to be a Wafu rather than a stoker. Subs ... f*ck that for a lark
